Some Cute Halloween Pictures From Last Friday Evening

Linda Scott sent us these pictures of the little ghosts and goblins at Langford Farms in Old Hickory.  They carried on an old tradition you don’t see as much anymore, a hayride.  It looks like a good time was had by all.  The weather certainly was nice, as well!

Fine Rains, Fine Foder

Last year at this time we had recieved only about 16″ of rain. So far this year our total is closer to 31″. This has made for much improved pasture conditions for the wild and the domestic. Mark Fagan sent this in of a healthy looking fawn looking for his/her share of grass. The deer population is by all reports doing fine after the drought stress of last year.

What A Moon!

Jerry Overcast sent us this picture of that “Solstice Moon” (or “Hay Moon” because it’s hay cutting time).  It sure was a cool sight.  In my opinion, it is the earth’s atmosphere magnifying the moon that makes it large (and red).  If you read this article:http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2008/16jun_moonillusion.htm there are other theories on why the moon is large.  They say that if you take a picture with a camera, the moon is not larger, and is the same size as when it is overhead.  However, the picture above shows it is large when seen by a camera.  Our video that we shot for the news showed it large, as well.  Hence, I think the atmosphere is magnifying the moon when it is low, since the light travels through more atmosphere than when it is overhead.  The old theory still lives, in my opinion!

Either way, it was a pretty sight!

Hail, Wind in Portland, TN Earlier This Afternoon

Jennifer Lewis in Portland sent us these pictures of 1/2 inch hail.

Derek Henson sent this picture of a tree down in Portland.

Incredible Picture From The Space Shuttle

You’ve seen the “anvil” from a thunderstorm before but not from this angle!  This thunderstorm is over Africa.  To see some more great shuttle pictures CLICK HERE. It might take a minute or two to download depending on your internet speed.

For the weather, see my entry below.

Bye Bye Cocoon, Hello World!

From A. Ligon in Hendersonville who wrote:

I took this picture of an emerging monarch butterfly while treking through the woods.  I didn’t realize that when I took it that she was still emerging.  If she had known it was so hot, do you think she would stayed in her cool cocoon?

Have a good day

Few Flurries Flying

I woke up to a dusting of snow on my deck this morning. A few additional flurries are flying this morning. Not enough to stick on the roads, but no complaints from this snow lover.

Ryan in Hickman County sent in these shots after midnight:
