School Visit
Thanks to the folks at Glen Leven Day School in Nashville for having me talk weather on Tuesday. I’m the tall kid in the back.

School Visit
Thanks to Mrs. Vance’s 3rd grade class at Christ the King school in Nashville for having me speak on Tuesday. The kids were very interested in the weather and had lots of great questions, having just completed a unit on weather.

Sunshine Day School in Franklin
Thanks to the teachers and students at Sunshine Day School in Franklin for their hospitality on Tuesday.

I also want to thank the 1st graders at Una Elementary School in Davidson County for having me talk weather earlier in the week.
Thanks to Union Heights Elementary & Huntland Jr. High
Top: Davis talking to kids at Union Heights Elementary in Carthage.
Bottom: Jr. High Teacher Mrs. Shultz at Huntland Jr. High in Franklin County
I had the opportunity to visit two schools last week: Union Heights Elementary in Carthage and Huntland Jr. High in Franklin County. Of course, we talked about tornadoes and Stormtracker. We also talked about what it takes to get a BIG SNOW here in Middle Tennessee. Hurricane Katrina is still a topic lots of folks want to know more about, and as you know, I have a lot to say about that!
Boy did I get baskets of goodies from these two schools! Thanks! A lot of folks in our newsroom say thanks, as well. I noticed a few extra pounds walking around News 2, but don’t worry, those VJ’s will work off weight very quickly.
Summertown Junior High
I took a road trip this morning to northern Lawrence County to visit the seventh and eighth graders at Summertown Junior High.
I spotted a sun dog as I drove along the Saturn Parkway. Sun dogs result when light bends through ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds. Hexagonal plate crystals (six-sided and flat) produce this optical phenomena. They appear to the left or right side of the sun at 22 degrees but are often overlooked because they’re so close to our favorite star.

Thanks to Brent Blackwood for setting up the visit. The 200 seventh and eighth graders had great questions and were especially attentive. For the record, the cookies from Summertown High cafeteria are delicious.

Columbia Academy Weather Talk
Just returned to the station after a morning weather talk at Columbia Academy in Maury County. The 4th grade classes were eager to learn more about the meteorology unit they’ve started. I’ll post another picture if I receive it this afternoon (one with more kids and less Justin). Thank to Becky Spears for the great gift basket; I’ll show it and the kids off tomorrow on News 2 at 8:00 am.
Making the Rounds
I had a nice visit with some Girl Scouts Troops yesterday in Franklin at Walnut Grove Elementary. The ladies had some wonderful questions and were very attentive. Later in the afternoon I made my way to Edmonson Elementary in Brentwood to speak with Cub Scout Pack 223. Some of the boys remembered me from their Cub Scout camp this summer and a few heard me speak at the elementary school late last school year. I guess I’m starting to make the rounds - perhaps it’s time for some new material! Pictures after the break.

Visit to Ft. Campbell
Had the opportunity to head to Ft. Campbell Tuesday morning to visit with many of the kids at Marshall Elementary School. Many thanks to Michelle Bague for setting up the talk and gracefully postponing the date a few times due to my weather duties in Nashville. She also gave me a delicious bag of Puerto Rican coffee that won’t last long around this television station. Additional thanks to Administrative Officer Rudy Stone for giving me a tour of the impressive 105,000 acre facility. Pictures at the school after the jump.

School Visit down in Franklin
Had the privilege to visit Battle Ground Academy Elementary School last Monday, talked to all the 3rd graders there. What a great bunch! Smart! The discussion centered on the air pressure, the Coriolis Effect and latent heat. Always lots of laughs and learning (a good combination when you can find it). Special thanks to Julia Marshal for inviting me.

Edmondson Elementary
Just returned from a visit to one hundred first graders at Edmondson Elementary in Brentwood. Nine times out of ten a school visit is an opportunity for me to hit roads less-travelled and visit new towns in Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. I always enjoy those trips but it’s also nice to hop in my car and drive down the road for five minutes and make my weather talk just in time! The kids had great questions (and knew the difference between a question and a story, which is always a bonus) and were very attentive listeners. We focused on spring weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes and hail. Thanks to Nicole Smith for arranging the visit. Teachers and students, rejoice: only five or six days left in the school year!
