Snow Chances By Tuesday In South & Southeast Counties

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

snow-accum-2-28

I may be getting ahead of myself, but why not?   It’s what you want to know.  Another system that will pass to our south on Tuesday may supply a few showers tomorrow afternoon and evening, but by Tuesday (maybe starting late Monday night) it could bring flurries to Nashville, but a possible accumulation in our south and southeast counties.  The map above is “preliminary”.  We will be updating the situation on Monday.

By the way, Monday’s highs should reach the mid 40s out ahead of the shower chances tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Sunday Sun Meant 50s, Clouds Meant 40s; Next System May Bring Showers, Then Slight Snow Chance For Some, Better Chance Southeast

afternoon-2-28

As expected the dividing line between clouds and sun (about I-24) meant the difference between temperatures in the 50s and 40s, even 30s to the east.  The clouds will increase for all of us later tonight as our next weather system pushes in from the west (see below).

nat-satrad-2-28

Once again, there is another system that is expected to pass to our south that could bring snow by Tuesday to parts of northern Alabama and Georgia.  Nashville may see a few flurries on Monday night and Tuesday.  However, I think it is possible that our southeastern cities like McMinnville, Sparta, Manchester, Winchester, Spencer, Sewanee, and Crossville may be clipped by this system, possibly bringing them an inch or so on Tuesday.  But that’s Tuesday

Tomorrow we expect cloudy skies with a chance for some afternoon showers with highs only in the mid 40s.

Today brings sun for some, clouds for others

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Sunday’s weather will feature a little bit of everything, and it all depends on where you live.

Temperatures will be in the upper 40s in Nashville and along the I-24 corridor. To the southwest of Nashville, look for ample sunshine and highs in the lower 50s. Meanwhile, areas to the northeast will hang onto clouds and only see highs in the lower 40s.

Here in Nashville and along the I-24 corridor, morning clouds should break up before midday and leave some sunshine for the afternoon.

20100228highs

Lows tonight will dip to about 30 degrees, with highs back in the mid-40s on Monday with a mostly cloudy sky.

On Tuesday a system will pass to our south, and that could bring a rain/snow mix to areas southeast of Nashville. Highs in the upper 30s are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Warmer temperatures should move in by the weekend (50s and 60s) but so will a small rain chance. We’ll keep you posted.

Clouds Push In Tonight; Push Out For Some On Sunday

clouds-2-27

The big East Coast snow storm (their 3rd) is “backing up” and expanding, and for us that means that some of the fringe clouds are dropping into Middle Tennessee from the northeast.  It will become mostly cloudy this evening, and there may be some flurries in our eastern counties (especially on The Plateau) overnight into Sunday morning.

On Sunday we may start out cloudy, but the clouds may recede to the east during the day bringing some sunshine back into Nashville while the clouds persist in our eastern counties.  Where we get the sunshine generally from Nashville west and southward, temps should reach the upper 40s to low 50s.  In the cloudy areas will remain in the low to mid 40s.

Listen To And Watch Hawaii TV

Here is the link:  http://hitsunami.info/

The Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia have already experienced the tsunami.  It was 6 feet there.  Expecting the same in Hawaii.  If I heard correctly, the one in 1960 was 35 feet.

Mostly sunny but chilly today, clouds push in late

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Mostly sunny weather kicks off the weekend. Temperatures are very chilly this morning, in the 20s and 30s, but will reach the mid-40s this afternoon. Clouds will sneak in from the northeast during the late afternoon and early evening.

Tonight through Sunday morning, a few flurries are possible in the northeast corner of Middle Tennessee (areas near the northern Plateau: Celina, Livingston, Cookeville, Sparta, Crossville, Jamestown).

Temperatures will stay in the mid-40s for Sunday, with a mix of clouds and a little sunshine (more sunshine to the south and west of Nashville).

Monday looks like another cool day (in the 40s) but we’re watching a system that may bring some flurries for Tuesday and/or Wednesday. We’ll keep you posted, although at this point in time it doesn’t look like a real big deal.

Winter continues as we wrap up February and begin March this week: temperatures will likely stay in the range of upper 30s to mid 40s…but may reach the 50s by Friday and next weekend.

Afternoon readings in the mid-40s (about 10 degrees below average).
Saturday high temperatures

Mostly sunny today, but clouds push in from the north/northeast late this afternoon and this evening.

A Little Warmer. A Little

Friday, February 26th, 2010

We’ll have highs reach toward the mid-40’s this afternoon. At least we are out of the 30’s for the first time in three days. Partly cloudy this morning, mostly sunny this afternoon with the winds picking up out of the northwest. This marks the 5th day with a north/northwest wind as we are closing in on the end of February.  This month goes down as the coldest February in the last 30 years (thanks Bobby Boyd).  Of course we’ve all paid the butcher bill on that in the form of rather high heating bills.

WEEKEND FORECAST

Partly cloudy on Saturday and a west wind (for a change). Highs reach into the upper 40’s.  Clouds build in at the end of the day with a chance for some snow Saturday night and Sunday morning along the northern tier from Portland over to the Plateau.

6am Sunday

Sunday mostly cloudy and cooler with highs in the low-40’s.

The next chance for rain/snow is on late Monday and through the day on Tuesday.  The below normal temperatures continue into March, highs only in the 40’s through Wednesday. Long range models show the chill will continue through the first week of the start of meteorological Spring (astronomical Spring starts March 20th):

Sunset Elementary

sunset-elem1

Thanks so much to Karyn Bailey, 3rd grade teacher at Sunset Elementary in Brentwood.  She arranged for me to talk to all of the third graders in the school’s open area. Since I arrived about 10 minutes late (as I write this: shaking my head, gritting my teeth, muttering under my breath because of the embarrassment) I didn’t get a chance to meet the other teachers.

If your child goes to Sunset will you please check the date on their birth certificates? It might translate to “3rd Grader” but they all talked like “9th Grader”.  Now that I know how to get to a place that Google Maps is confused about perhaps I can come next year and talk to a class more my level…like the PreK.

Here is the video that we’ll show this morning (if no breaking news; then - Monday):

The School tour continues, today I’ll talk to Sunset Elementary in Brentwood this morning. I just hope there is a Starbucks between here and there…

I want to thank Tomi Wiley, managing editor of the Chronicle of Mt. Juliet for showing up at Lakeview Elementary for my visit there last week.  Not only is she the paper’s editor she is also the photographer:

I included all four pictures she sent so you can get a sense of the antics, wild gesturing and different voices you have to use to keep a 3rd graders attention for 30 minutes.  Believe me when I say that I’m exhausted when I’m finished.  Tomi was kind enough to put one of the pictures in her paper:

Tomi has a list of titles by the way, you’ve probably seen her byline in other publications.  She also helps run a great writing seminar at Cumberland College in Lebanon.  WordFest ‘10 will be on June 19 this year, you can check out www.tn-writers.org for details.

Here are some of the other titles Tomi carries:

Publisher / Managing Editor, The Tennessee Writer, a membership newsletter for TWA
Staff Writer, Wilson Living magazine
Staff Writer, www.countrymusicpride.com

You should “friend” her on facebook. The woman’s post are hysterical sometimes. What a sense of humor…

Plateau Snow, Basin Sun

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Clouds and accumulating snow overnight and this morning for the higher elevations to the east. This is typical when there is a powerful low off the coast in New England- it pulls down upper air disturbances on the backside of the low that can kick up light snow in the southern Appalachian and the Plateau. There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until noon for a cluster of our eastern counties:

WxAdvisory

For the basin (geographically refered to as “The Nashville Dome”) where Lebanon, Murfreesboro and Nashville sit will enjoy lots of sunshine today. This should help get this cold morning temperatures into the 40-degree range by afternoon. Clear skies tonight and in the low 20’s. Highs on your Friday should hit the mid-40’s, still a full ten degrees below normal for time of year. We are going to have dry but cold weather for the weekend and the start of March. The next chance for some snow will be on Tuesday, right now it looks like a minor event.
