Snow Still Sticking Around; Secondary Roads Refreezing Tonight

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

vis-1-31

The visible (daytime) satellite picture shows the snow on the ground under clear skies today.  Notice how the snow cuts off right at the Alabama/Tennessee state line.  Also, it’s neat to see the rivers and lakes outlined by the snow.

Although the main roads showed improvement today, those secondary roads were still pretty bad, despite above freezing temps during the afternoon.  Temps in the teens tonight will only refreeze any melting, causing black ice.  Many of the secondary roads were still snow packed.  We also should see some freezing fog by morning which can be pretty on the trees, but stick to concrete and solid objects.

One more note, if there is still any snow or ice on your front steps, be careful in the morning.  The melting and refreezing can be especially dangerous.

On Monday, temps should jump to the mid 40s with a southeasterly breeze at 5-10 mph.  That will help.  However, I am sure that out in the country roads in some of the shadowy areas there may still be some ice remaining tomorrow night and Tuesday morning.

Snow Sunday For The Kids!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Although the secondary roads are still a mess, the kids all had a great time today.  Check out the pictures:

Sunny, but still slick

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The Mid-South continues to resemble an ice chest as we round out the weekend.

Morning temperatures in the single digits and teens will climb to the upper 20s to near 30 degrees during the afternoon.

Expect lots of sunshine, but slick roads will persist.

Tonight, a clear sky and snow pack on the ground will make for frigid conditions. Look for lows in the upper single digits to low teens (about 13 degrees in Nashville).

Monday afternoon will see above-freezing temperatures, with clouds pushing in from the west. Slippery conditions should finally begin to improve as the mercury climbs above 32 degrees for the first time in several days.

Treacherous Roads To Continue…Church Closings On This Web Site

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

outlook-1-30

Click on “School Closings” icon (school bus) to the right for church closings and late openings.

With temperatures expected to drop to near 10 here in the city and single digits just to the north, any wet spots on roads will become black ice.  Many roads were still snow and ice covered.  On Sunday, the high should not get above freezing, with the white snow reflecting the sun rather than absorbing it and creating heat.  Therefore, the secondary roads won’t get much better on Sunday afternoon.  Sunday night we will drop to the low to mid teens, but on Monday afternoon we will finally get above freezing reaching the upper 30s.  My hunch is that the secondary roads still won’t completely clear out on Monday.

Snowfall Totals

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Thanks to viewers who sent in snowfall totals. Some of these accumulations were reported before the sleet/ice fell on top of the snow and weighed it down.

Please update everyone with your observed snowfall amount in the comments section (be sure to mention your location).

A Little More To Go Through

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Icing started to become widespread last night and continues this morning. Most reported between 3″-5″ of snow with a crusting of ice on top. Light amounts of sleet/freezing rain mixed in sometimes with snow continues the first half of the day. About another inch of this mixed precipitation will fall by the first half of the day being replaced by flurries this afternoon. Cloudy all day and highs only in the upper 20’s with a brisk north wind.

It will clear out tonight with temperatures falling into the single digits tonight. It’s a full moon out there tonight so it’ll be bright with the reflection off the snow. Highs tomorrow only in around 30 under sunny skies so the exposed roads will improve maybe but it’ll be likely these very poor road conditions will continue through Monday. Temperatures around 40 on by Monday afternoon but in the mid-40’s by Tuesday.

Below Predictor shows the snow still falling but moving east as the day goes on:

Snow/Ice/Rain Continues until Midnight… longer east of town

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Our mixed bag of winter weather continues to move across the midstate.  The precipiation has broken up a great deal back to our west, so it looks like it end for a time tonight.  I do think on again/off again snow showers will pick up again Saturday with additional light accumulations possible for some.

5:30pm: Icing Reported From Columbia To Manchester To Murfreesboro

Friday, January 29th, 2010

We are starting to get reports of sleet and ice in our southern counties.  In particular, we have had reports from Columbia (after they had 4-5″ of snow), Manchester, and Murfreesboro.  Hopefully, it will not turn into an ice storm that brings down tree limbs and power lines, but that is a possibility.  We will monitor that.

Below are some reports from the National Weather Service as of this afternoon.  Obviously, these amounts will change and update.

2pm: 5″ in Columbia & Manchester

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The EMA managers in both Columbia and Manchester are reporting 5″ of snow, with the snow changing to sleet and freezing rain in Manchester.  Many other reports ranged in the 1-2″ category.  I am sure that there are other worthy totals that are higher than 1-2″.

This is just the beginning.  We expect the heaviest snow overnight through tomorrow morning.  4-6″ totals are likely by Saturday morning with some 9-10″ isolated pockets possible.

Our biggest worry is that we could still see freezing rain stick to trees and power lines in some areas south of Nashville overnight tonight as some warm air over rides the freezing air at the surface.  We hope that does not happen, but it is a good possibility, so we will keep you posted.
