Freezing Start

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The temperature at the Nashville Airport dropped to below freezing this morning, the latest in the season this has happened in 108 years. No more Freeze Warnings now until Spring.

Right now November ranks as the driest November ever recorded. How does it end on Monday? With the biggest rain we’ve had all month. Steel yourself for a wet, cold and windy Monday morning coming out of the long weekend.l

Cold Start to a Sunny Day

freezing start

For those out early this morning we have the coldest temperatures so far this Fall. Temperatures should hit just around freezing for the first time this season at the Nashville airport, tying the record for the latest first freeze. Sunny today with highs gettting in the low 50’s.  The growing season counts 251 days, the second longest on record.

Tonight a light south wind with lows just above freezing. That south wind teamed with sunshine tomorrow will get us into the low 60’s. A nice Saturday and Sunday in fact, highs in the 60’s again but clouds coming in at the tail of the weekend. A few showers possible for the Titan’s game but a big rain coming in late Sunday night and Monday. Sunday will have more in clouds and a little bit of a breeze. Monday will be cold and very wet.

“Latest first freeze” on record expected tonight

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Here’s an interesting e-mail that we received today from Nashville National Weather Service forecaster (and all-around weather wizard) Bobby Boyd:

November 27th is the Latest First Freeze on Record In Nashville

It’s possible that Nashville will tie the record the for latest first freeze and could set a new all-time record for the latest first freeze this weekend. The latest that Nashville has gone in the fall without reaching 32 degrees or colder is November 27th and it occurred back in 1902. Although a Freeze Warning is in effect for a large part of Middle Tennessee for late tonight and early Friday the forecast low at the Nashville Airport is 33 degrees.** The coldest temperature so far this fall at the Nashville Airport has been 34 degrees. Last year the first freeze of the fall occurred on October 29th with 29 degrees. The average date of the latest first freeze in the fall is October 28th based on 1971-2000 averages. In contrast the earliest freeze on record occurred on October 2nd 1984.

Meteorologist
NWS/Nashville, TN

**I am predicting a low of 32 degrees in Nashville, while the NWS is going with 33 degrees. So, I think that we’ll likely tie the record “latest first freeze” of November 27th. Either way, it’s going to be chilly!

Bundle Up, Black Friday Shoppers!

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

It has been a chilly Thanksgiving, with clouds and a northwest breeze limiting temperatures to the 40s.

Evening temperatures will fall into the 30s, with overnight lows at or below the freezing mark. Clouds will break up overnight, bringing more sunshine for Black Friday.

If you’re one of the brave souls doing some shopping early Friday, bundle up because it will be in the 30s! Look for a mainly clear sky - sunrise is at 6:36 a.m., for the record.

Highs tomorrow will approach 50 degrees, thanks to lots of sunshine. A cool west breeze at 5 to 10 mph is expected.

On Saturday, sunshine continues and highs will hit the lower 60s.

Colder Day Ahead

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

We’ll have cloud come around mid-day and a northwest wind pick up. This colder air will visit us for the next couple of days. Temperatures by mid-day should reach into the upper 40’s, then either hold and drop slightly later today. There will be a few showers or drizzle as this cold air pours in. Though we start with some sunshine this morning you can see how Predictor quickly brings in the clouds:

At Noon Today

Cloudy by 4pm

Tonight temperatures will get down to around freezing, a Freeze Watch is in effect for middle Tennessee.

Freeze Watch Tnt

Tomorrow a little afternoon sunshine will get the highs only around 50 as this cold air sticks around for another day. By Saturday a southwest wind picks up and helps push the highs into the 60-degree range.  Dry weather until Sunday night and Monday.

Chilly Thanksgiving On The Way; Flurries Possible East & Plateau By Thanksgiving Evening

highs-thanksgiving-11-25

Enjoy the sunshine today along with relatively mild temperatures (near 60 (although the wind will make it feel cooler).  Overnight tonight, our anticipated cold front should push into the area dropping temps to mid 30s tomorrow morning.  On Thanksgiving Day, clouds should increase by midday, and temps will struggle to the upper 40s for highs.  A west & northwesterly breeze at 10-20 mph will make it feel even colder.  There is a slight chance for a few showers in our afternoon and evening clouds.  We still think that a few snow flurries may occur Thanksgiving evening in the eastern parts of Middle Tennessee, especially The Cumberland Plateau.

Sunshine Today, Clouds Tomorrow

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Highs today get into the upper 50’s under mostly sunny skies. Winds pick up this afternoon out of the southwest but nice travel weather today around Tennessee and bordering states. Tonight partly cloudy and cold, lows getting down into the mid-30’s.

Tomorrow clouds come in quickly, a few sprinkles and a cold wind; highs only in the upper 40’s with a west wind 10-15mph. You’ll need a winter coat tomorrow through the day! If you are out shopping on Friday it’ll be mostly sunny with an afternoon high around 50.

If you are traveling today there is a cold rain from Chicago over across Ohio, some snow in the northern plains, some storms in Florida. Have a great Thanksgiving!Travel Weather

Some Sun This Afternoon; Brief Shower Late Tonight; Colder Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

sat-11-24

Some sunshine will work its way into Nashville during the afternoon hours today, helping temperatures to reach the low 60s.  To the east, clouds may persist most of the day where temps will stay in the 50s.

Tonight, there is a chance for a few very brief showers in the 10pm to midnight range.  They will move out quickly, and Wednesday should be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 50s.

We are still expecting a cold snap to push in on Thanksgiving Day, that may yield a few flurries on the Cumberland Plateau Thanksgiving night through Friday morning.

In the long range forecast, we have our eye on a rather strong low pressure center that could bring us some heavy rain next Monday which could change to snow Monday evening through Tuesday morning.  There are a lot of “ifs” concerning that system at this point in time, but we wanted to give you a heads up on early next week.

A Little Sunshine, A Little Warmer

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

We’ll enjoy highs today in the low 60’s under partly sunny skies (by afternoon). Those clouds return quickly this evening with rain in the forecast late tonight and overnight. It appears to be a very light rain in store for us:

10pm tonight

2am tomorrow

It should be very light rain, clouds will keep the overnight lows in the mid-40’s. Highs tomorrow in the upper 50’s and breezy under partly cloudy skies.

Thanksgiving looks a little raw; clouds with a few light showers on occasion with a cold wind. Highs will only reach around 50 for a high. Near freezing to start Friday but lots of sunshine, desipite which we’ll still only have highs in the upper 40’s.

Mist & Fog Overnight; Clouds Give Way To Sun Tuesday Afternoon; Plateau Flurries Thanksgiving Night

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

The low clouds, patchy drizzle, mist and fog will hang around overnight tonight, as temps drop to upper 40s later this evening and remain steady overnight.  On Tuesday it will be overcast through around midday, and then we expect some sunshine to finally burn through the clouds during the afternoon.  That should push temps to the 60s for highs.  Tomorrow night around midnight, we will see some brief showers that will be gone by Wednesday morning.

The big news is the Thanksgiving forecast when temps will tumble from near 50 to 40s during the afternoon.  A few showers may give way to some snow flurries Thanksgiving night through Friday morning along the Cumberland Plateau.  On Friday, highs will only be in the mid 40s, with a freeze possible Saturday morning.
