From Davis In Japan: I Can’t Believe Your Weather! Plus One More Japan Story: The “Uozu Mirage”

I’ve been enjoying Justin’s posts on the record cool weather you have been enjoying in Middle Tennessee.  I see that indeed for the second day in a row that Nashville either set or broke a record “min max”.   Today’s 77 broke the old record of 79 set in 1897  (see the Special Weather Statement  from The National Weather Service).  That’s an old one!  And yesterday’s tie was a 1918 record.  Combine that with record low temps, and you are looking at some unusual July temperatures indeed.  People at area pools and lakes must have thought it was chilly!  I bet the water was warm, though.

If you don’t mind, before I leave Japan I’d like to share one more interesting thing.  The “Uozu Mirage”

Imagine if you lived on the coast and looked northward out to sea and saw a neighboring city that was actually ten miles to your southwest.  The map below shows Japan with the insert indicating Toyama Bay, where the people in the city of Uozu sometimes  see a mirage of the city of Toyama.  This occurs during the spring and fall, so I did not actually get to see it “live”, but we visited a museum with plenty of pictures.  The mirage occurs when cool air just above the water is overlain by warm air.  The density difference  of the air refracts the light of the city of Toyama creating the mirage for the people in Uozu.

Sometimes you see the image upside down, or a combination of right side up/upside down as seen in the picture of the ship  below.  The smaller boat is not a mirage, but is in the foreground.

Pretty cool!  Speaking of that, y’all keep cool.  As Justin says, you may be flirting with another record low Monday morning!
