90’s and Isolated Storms

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

90-plus degree days the norm of late- it continues with the forecasted high today around 92. But a slight storm chance again as a stationary front hangs over middle Tennessee inciting some storm activity in the daytime heating. We actually have a northeast wind today but it only drops the daytime high out of the mid-90’s to the low 90’s. Dry weather Wednesday and Thursday but storm chances show back on Friday. Below is how Predictor puts the storms chances mostly along the western counties this afternoon.

Storms Weaken

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

The strongest storm cell left at 10:45 pm is in northern Hickman County sliding south into Centerville. Otherwise, the storms have fizzled and we can sleep tight.

Isolated Wind Damage

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

A lone storm cell brought down trees and tree limbs and caused power problems from Robertson County through eastern Davidson County but was fizzling by 6:45 pm as it pushed south of Murfreesboro.

Another batch of storms in Kentucky could bring us a few more isolated cells early tonight.  Chances are they won’t be as strong because the sun will be setting.

The afternoon storm did leave behind this pretty rainbow in Hendersonville.

While we may see an isolated cell early Tuesday, most of the day should be dry.  High temperatures will reach the low 90s.

More of the Heat

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

First full day of summer and the heat continues. Highs today in the mid-90’s with a mere 20% storm chance this afternoon. The clouds and storms more frequent to the east on the Plateau where a stationary front sits. Highs in the upper 80’s in the higher elevations while the basin bakes in that typical summer heat that’s set in a little early this year. There is a chance of rain overnight from these storms diving in from the north. There is a slightly better chance (30%) of storms tomorrow as this stationary front shifts just a little more west and straddles the basin. Otherwise it’s all about the heat, the typical high this time of year is around the mid-80’s. That sounds like a cool day after 5 days in a row of 90 plus.

Hottest Day So Far This Year On Saturday; More For Sunday

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

The official high in Nashville on Saturday was 94 degrees making it the hottest day so far this year.  We may even top that on Sunday with 95.  The heat index will be between 100-105.  There will only be about a 20% chance for an isolated t’shower in the heat, with chances picking up to 30-40% on Monday.  That may hold temps down to low 90s on Monday.

Remember, don’t over-exert yourself in the heat.  Get in the shade and drink plenty of water.  Don’t leave kids or pets in the car, even with the windows down.

Heat To Continue Sunday; Scattered T’Showers Monday

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

outlook-6-20

Temps soared to the mid 90s this afternoon, and this evening we are not likely to dip below 90 until about 8:30pm.  It won’t get below 80 until around midnight with lows expected in the mid  70s.

We will still be looking at a heat index above 100 degrees again tomorrow afternoon with only a slight chance for an isolated t’shower.  Take it easy in the heat.

On Monday, there is a better chance for scattered t’showers (about 30%).  This might keep the high in the low 90s, but the humidity will still keep the heat index near 100.

Hottest Weekend of the Year

Friday, June 19th, 2009

This is a guest post from our summer weather intern, WKU student Stephanie Midgett. - Justin

This weekend will qualify as the hottest weekend yet in 2009.Tomorrow temperatures will be in the mid 90s, but the heat index will make it feel anywhere from 100º to 105º here in the mid-state.

Saturday brings with it a high of around 96º and a slight chance of isolated showers in the evening hours. Sunday will also be warm with less chance of rain, but the rain chances increase for Monday and Tuesday of next week. A large ridge dominates the weather pattern so we will be hot for the foreseeable future. Although summer officially begins on Sunday, it looks like the summertime temperatures have arrived a bit early.

Hot Days Ahead

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Summer starts this weekend and the weather proves it. Highs today on your Friday in the mid-90’s. Yesterday’s mid-day clouds (and east Tennessee’s storms) saved us from a really hot day. Those storms are well to our north today so more in sunshine means more in heat. The heat index if fact will hover close to 105.  The rain chances for the weekend continue to get smaller as the temperatures get higher: Saturday in the mid to upper-90’s and Sunday in the mid-90’s. It appears that Sunday and Monday offer the next chance of rain- it’s a slim chance at that. We are going to start the summer with typical weather- hot and dry.

A few events to mention. One is the Moon Pie and RC Festival down in Bell Buckle tomorrow. Tonight is a Solstice party at Nashville Shores from 6:30 to 11p (this is an over 21 party). Tomorrow evening is the “Taste of Music City” festival on Korean Veterans Bridge in downtown Nashville from 5pm-9pm. Summer is here by every definition: enjoy! (just drink plenty of fluids, avoid direct exposure to the sun and wear loose fitting light-colored clothing).

Storms hitting northeast corner of Middle TN

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Storms with the possibility of quarter-sized hail are hitting the northern part of the Cumberland Plateau right now (12:15 p.m.). In addition to the hail threat, expect lots of lightning and some strong gusty wind as these storms move southeast at 20 mph.

Warning is for Pickett Co. and northern part of Fentress Co., but also watch out in Clay Co., Overton Co., and possibly Putnam Co. and Cumberland Co. if the storm’s expand southward just a bit.

The Heat is On

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Severe weather chances today limited to the plateau and east Tennessee. When you subtract the build up of afternoon clouds (or morning storms!) and a round of severe weather (every day so far this week) and replace it with a little sunshine you get temperatues in the mid 90’s. With a dewpoint temperature forecast to be at 70 (very high) this means a heat index of 103 degrees. If you are standing in full sun you can add ten or fifteen degrees to that number. This is our first really hot summer day (summer solstice by the way Saturday 12:45am) so take caution. Plenty of fluids and breaks, avoid sunshine hitting skin. Light colored clothing a must today. This is typical weather come mid-July so we’ll all get used to it (sort of).  There is a threat of severe weather again on the plateau. Below is the Storm Prediction Center thoughts on the severe threat for eastern half of Tennessee. Below that showing how Predictor puts the storm chances on the plateau.
