Joe Dubin forwarded an e mail to me with these pictures.  No, they have not been “Photoshopped”!  Daytona Beach has had over 17″ of rain since Sunday.  It’s a good thing neither of the two big races is this weekend!

The track is completely flooded.  Read more at autoweek.com

Scattered Rain Chances Increase Over The Memorial Day Weekend

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

se-5-22

We have been talking about this Gulf low all week long and how it may affect our Memorial Day Weekend.  Above you can see the projected path of the system moving into Louisiana on Saturday and northwest Mississippi/Southeast Arkansas on Sunday.  As it moves closer, our rain chances increase.  Therefore Saturday overnight and Sunday looks the wettest.  On Monday it will be moving northwestward through Arkansas and farther away from us.  Here is my breakdown of the shower chances:

Saturday:  50% chance for showers.

Sunday:  70% chance for showers.

Memorial Day:  50% chance for showers.

I hate to see everyone cancel their plans for the Memorial Day weekend.  It probably won’t rain all day any of the 3 days, but keep in mind you will probably encounter a shower or thunderstorm at some time with some peeks of sun in between the clouds.  Sunday looks the wettest.

A Little Rain Around

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

We have more in clouds and finally again some rain. It’s been since last Saturday we’ve had a little rain around here but some fell this morning. We expect a little more this afternoon and early evening under mostly cloudy skies. A few scattered storms tomorrow as well as we roll into our Memorial weekend. Warm days, in the low 80’s this afternoon and tomorrow. Not a wash-out this weekend just some morning sprinkles and afternoon storms scattered about. Still looking like the best chance of rain falls on Monday. Below is how Predictor puts the afternoon storms chances both this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon:

Dry Tonight, But Showers Tomorrow

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Clouds will increase throughout the evening and overnight, but it looks like the showers will hold off until Friday.  Even then the wet weathe will be scattered.  We will probably even see a few peeks of sunshine in the afternoon which will help us get to near 80 for the high.

Warm and Muggy

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Highs today in low 80’s again with higher humidity than earlier in the week. We’ll also notice more in afternoon clouds. It’s tomorrow the rain chances start to show up again; only about a 20% chance on Friday and Saturday and a 30% chance on Sunday. Certainly not a wash out this holiday though it appears that the best chance of rain for the long weekend falls on Memorial Day- right now we’ll put the chance at 40%. Across the period we’ll enjoy by-the-pool (or lake) temperatures: highs in the low 80’s or upper 70’s and humid. Below is how Predictor puts the rain chances around tomorrow afternoon:

Beautiful Day Today; Shower Chances This Weekend, But Don’t Cancel Plans; Chances Increase Monday

us-sat-5-20

Over the last several days we have been talking about how the “tropical looking”  system (not really tropical with cold air trough aloft) in The Gulf of Mexico could bring us shower chances for the Memorial Day Weekend.  However, as it pushes west and then northwestward we will just be on the fringes of the system’s moisture.  I’d say that chances for rain Friday-Sunday stand at about 30%, and that would be scattered.  You may encounter a passing shower, but don’t cancel your plans, just be aware.

mem-day-5-21

However, by Monday, as you can see on the GFS computer models prediction above, the system begins to move inland towards and closer to Middle Tennessee.  If that verifies, the chances for Memorial Day Monday appear to be at 60-70%.

Little Warmer, Just as Nice

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

More sunshine and dry weather in store for us today. A little warmer, highs in the low 80’s but low humidity again thanks to an east wind. This all changes starting tomorrow as the humidity increases and clouds start to show up again. We have very slight rain chances tomorrow afternoon but still only about a 20% chance on Friday and Saturday. The rain chances do pick up just in time for the holiday; looks like the best chances right now will fall on Memorial Day Monday and the following Tuesday.  We will end this wet month of May with some wet weather (next work week). Below is the low pressure system down in the Gulf we started talking about early this week. It will likely bring some wet and windy conditions down in the gulf coast over the holiday weekend; it is the culprit in our rain chances this weekend as well.

Gulf Low

Warming up after frost advisory

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

We had a frost advisory in effect for the higher elevations in our eastern half as lows again got down into the mid to upper 30’s. The cold worries not to linger, by 10am will be rapidly getting toward 60 degrees and top out in the mid 70’s this afternoon. Another glorious Spring day for us with low humidity and “severe clear”: a very blue sky. Tonight not as cold with lows around 50, highs tomorrow return to the 80 degree weather we last had last Friday. In fact that 80 degree weather contines the rest of the work week with only slight rain chances showing up by Friday and Saturday. Those rain chances improves a little on Sunday and especially on Monday (yes, Memorial Day).

memorial-day

Half the long range models have a low pressure system developed in the Gulf, the GFS above puts a less-rainy broad area of low pressure at the surface. We’ll have to wait till we get closer to see just how wet it’ll be not only around here but especially along the sandy resorts on the Florida Gulf.

Frost Advisory For Some Areas Tonight

Monday, May 18th, 2009

frost-advisory-5-18

The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for overnight tonight for between 2am-10am.  As winds die down overnight under clear skies we are expecting temps to drop into the mid to upper 30s in may areas from I-40 northward (including Nashville), and in the eastern parts of Middle Tennessee.  The frost will be most likely in low lying areas.  Remember, frost can occur when the air temperature is above 32 because the ground is a solid object that can radiate its heat out rapidly, allowing it to get colder than the air above it (much like the top of or car).

Many of us have sensitive plants in our gardens already.  It’s better to cover them with a sheet or a blanket rather than with plastic.  The plastic acts like a greenhouse when the sun comes up, and causes the plant to heat up too rapidly, possibly damaging it.
