Storms wind down

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Monday afternoon’s thunderstorms were winding down around 7:00 PM.

A storm in Montgomery County knocked down several trees, and the National Weather Service reported that a tree fell onto a house on Fairway Rd at 4:25 PM.  Given the storm’s quick intensification and high lightning count, that report sounds believable.  An earlier storm knocked down trees and damaged outbuildings near the Kentucky state line in Clay County at 2:45 PM.

A hot and humid day is expected Tuesday. Look for highs in the 90s. A pop-up thundershower is possible tomorrow afternoon, but I think we’ll see fewer showers than we did today. That will improve our odds at heating up; I’m going for 93 degrees in Nashville and most areas south of I-40. Did I mention the humidity? Dewpoints will run in the middle to upper 60s (at least) so it will feel very, very sultry Tuesday afternoon.

Monday afternoon storms

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Storms are crossing Nashville just in time to slow down the afternoon drive home.  The storms will contain lots of lightning and heavy downpours, and the possibility of hail in a few spots.  Head inside if the storms are in your area.

I’ll have more on the storms and we’ll look ahead to Tuesday’s heat on News 2 this afternoon at 4:00 PM, 4:30 PM, 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Hot Monday Ahead

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Its been a couple of weeks since we’ve had a high reach up into the mid-90’s. That is where we should be this afternoon with a mostly sunny start. Interesting to note that half of the forecast models put rain chances into our northern third this afternoon. THis is from an MCS moving down from the north out of Illinois. I’m thinking we’ll see some clouds with the rain getting maybe as close as the Ky/Tn border. We are always looking for rain in the months of July/August so perhaps the remnants of the storms will help trigger some around here in the heat of day. We can hope! Otherwise we’ll likely have to wait until Wednesday for a good rain chance. Below is how Predictor shows rain chances today and then again on Wednesday.

Sunday forecast

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Another warm and muggy day is on the way, with projected high temperatures near 90 degrees.  The combination of heat and humidity may yield an isolated afternoon pop-up thundershower, but the chance is actually pretty small today.

A few scattered afternoon thundershowers are possible on Monday and/or Tuesday, but most places will miss out on rain over the next three days.  A southwest flow at the surface will keep things hot; look for afternoon highs in the lower 90s Monday and Tuesday.

On Wednesday a front will slowly move across Tennessee and bring widespread showers and thundershowers.

Storms continue in southern parts of mid-state

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Thunderstorms continue across the southern part of Middle Tennessee.

Some of the storms contain hail and gusty wind.

We expect the storms to start fizzling over the next few hours.

Storms stay down south

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

As predicted, this afternoon’s thundershowers have stayed down in the southern part of Middle Tennessee.

Watch out for lightning down in the southern counties of Middle Tennessee.  Some of the storms will also contain some hail and gusty wind, although there have been no warnings so far this afternoon.

Weekend forecast

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Temperatures will run at or above average through the middle of next week, and the humidity will also be on the high side.  The combination of hot and muggy will lead to small chances of pop-up thundershowers almost every day (check the seven day forecast for specifics).

Today the forecast calls for some scattered t’showers to develop, mainly in the afternoon.  Any backyard could see a brief t’shower, but the southern half of Middle Tennessee (south of I-40) is the favored area.

Highs today will reach the middle to upper 80s, while morning clouds give way to a partly cloudy sky the rest of the day.

Only a small rain chance at midday.

Afternoon chance is better south of I-40.

Fireworks Forecast

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Only isolated (a handful in all our 50 county coverage area) t’showers around at fireworks time tonight.   That means most shows will go on as scheduled.  If you happen to be under one of those isolated t’showers, it shouldn’t last more than 15 to 20 minutes max.

Happy 4th of July!

Rain, Storms for the Fourth

Friday, July 4th, 2008

As we’ve been talking about all week the rain chances holding off for the holiday. A mostly cloudy start with rain across our northern counties (southern Ky). By afternoon storms start to build up with most of the activity to the west of Nashville. By mid-afternoon and through the rest of the day storms chances are just about everywhere, about a 70% coverage. The storm coverage will lessen as we go into the evening, down to about a 30% chance. Storm/shower chances continue tomorrow but most of it should be across our southern third. Here is how Predictor shows storm coverage at 2p and then again 8p:

More Dry Weather, Little Warmer

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

We’ll get close to that typical 90 degree mark today with again low dewpoints for July. Muggy air returns in force tomorrow setting us up for some rain by the holiday.
