Blizzard of 1993 - 15th Anniversary
Today is the 15th anniversary of the Blizzard of ‘93 - many call it the “Storm of the Century”.
The snow totals weren’t impressive in Nashville, but historic across much of the nation, including areas south of Music City.

Nashville 2.8″
Columbia 2.0″
Pulaski 4.1″
McMinnville 9.0″
Shelbyville 7.0″
Crossville 20.5″
Winchester 12.5″
Mt. Leconte 60″
Chattanooga 20″
Birmingham, AL 17″
When it wrapped up, the storm was responsible for 270 deaths and $3 to $6 billion in damages.
Old storm coverage from Birmingham is on YouTube - very enjoyable for us snow lovers!

I loved watching this (and the second part of it) video(s) because I lived in Birmingham when all of this happened. I was young, and it was probably the most fun I had in my life, thus far. I was in the “thundersnow” and played out in it all night that night. They kept saying it was a “once in a lifetime” thing and I agree. Now I’m in Nashville, every snow chance reminds of this and I am always disappointed. I remember us measuring 2′ snow drifts and 21″ of snow in the woods behind my house. I was not at school for 5 days after! It was truly an amazing weather event.

I might add that the BNA snow dome did it’s job! We only got 2″ at the airport! lol

I lived here (Coffee County) during that weather event, however I was only about 4 years old at the time so I don’t remember much except what we have on video. I believe we received about 7.5 ~ 8″. It was exciting to watch…maybe something like that will happen again here one of these winters…eh, who am I kidding? =p

I was about 4 years old and living in Nashville when this happened… Awesome watching that old news footage; those guys were on it! It’s so much more exciting to get snow down south than in Northern MN.
