Freezing Rain Advisory

advisory.jpg

The arrival time of precipitation Thursday morning will be tricky.

We could get some very light mist or drizzle before daybreak which would freeze on surfaces and could cause trouble.

The more substantial precipitation should arrive after daybreak but still the northwestern corner (the areas shaded in pink) could continue to develop ice on roads and surfaces well into the day.

Nashville should see temps warm above freezing by late morning to noon. It may take quite a bit longer for Clarksville and areas into Kentucky.

Many interstates and major roads were coated in brine which should help melt the ice on those streets and side roads could be treacherous for a time.

Eclipse over Nashville

Debbie H. sends this shot of the lunar eclipse over Nashville around 8:30 tonight.

The celestial show was playing peek-a-boo with the clouds with some folks getting a better view than others.

The total eclipse continues until 9:51pm then you will see the moon reemerge from the earth’s shadow with partial eclipse ending at 11:09pm.

Enjoy… if you can brave the chilly night air.

Dropping Temps, Icing Threat

We continue to watch the models all offer different solutions to the icing potential late tonight and tomorrow. Before I write of that more first today: clouds coming in with a cold front late morning and temperatures dropping. We’ll actually have our daytime high late morning; we’ll be in the 30’s this afternoon with a NW wind. Cloudy tonight though there might be a few breaks in those clouds during the lunar eclipse (9:01p-9:51p).

Predictor shows icing going on by tomorrow morning across the western and northwestern areas of middle Tennessee. Right now I thinking amounts will be very light but the event will spread east as the morning continues. I think it’ll be going on all through the morning (or at least the threat continues till afternoon) before it changes over to rain. We are keeping a close watch to the situation. The temperatuers look right its just a question on if there will be enough precip to cause big problems. As you know however it only takes a little ice to make for big problems.

Here is how Predictor handles the icing event tomorrow morning:

Peeks of Total Lunar Eclipse

The timing of Wednesday evening’s total lunar eclipse is great for family viewing. During total eclipse Saturn and its rings and the bright star Regulus will flank the moon and really pop out of the sky!

Unfortunately, clouds will hamper viewing at times… especially for the southern half of middle Tennessee. I am hopeful we will have enough breaks from time to time to see some of it here in Nashville.

Sun Back Out Today, But We Are Concerned About Ice Possibilities Thursday Morning

predictor-8am-thu.jpg

predictor-5am-thu.jpg

The snow showers and snow flurries were pretty this morning, and now the sun is back out. What won’t be pretty is if we get any ice on Thursday morning.

We have another day to look at this, but a strong arctic high will drop into Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, bringing another shot of cold air. By Thursday morning, low pressure will be forming near the Texas coast. If any moisture moves in early Thursday morning, it will probably be in the form of sleet and freezing rain with a little snow, as temps at the surface remain below freezing. We feel fairly sure that the temps will be below freezing, the question is how soon will the precip arrive? News 2 Predictor (called the RPM Model) shows a mix here by sunrise. That could be trouble for rush hour on Thursday morning. The good news is that temps warm during the day and it all changes to rain, so the evening rush hour on Thursday will only be wet. Another question is will enough ice form anywhere to cause power outages. That’s a possibility, especially in our northwest and western counties. If we get lucky, the precip will move in late, but we’re not counting on it.

A Dusting But Little More

Here are some pictures from Robin in White House.

Another Winter Day

A little snow this morning but highs today will hover in the mid-40’s. A west wind today will clear out the morning clouds some by mid-day on. By tomorrow morning some sprinkles but that will change over to a mix by afternoon. Into early Thursday morning we could have some freezing rain fall, we are keeping a close watch to this as we get closer to the event. Below are the forecasted highs for today:

More in a few moments but there is light snow/flurries moving in from the west. From Dover to Springfield looks to be getting the light snow, it might be enough to dust the grass and driveways. Temperatures are above freezing so it appears roads will be fine. Sorry kids!

A Few Flurries

Mark Fagan captures a little spring time on this chilly Monday.

Pockets of flurries will fling through the midstate this evening into early morning. The evening flurries should evaporate or melt immediately.

Temps will dip below freezing by midnight and the winds will back off a bit so it is not out of the question an isolated burst of flurries could coat a surface or two into early Tuesday morning.

Windy & 70 on Sunday, Cold Monday With Possible Afternoon & Evening Snow Showers

The hourly reports showed 70 for a high today in Nashville, along with winds gusting to 40-45mph across the area. By the way, the record for today is 78 set in 1925.

But things are about to return to more normal type conditions for mid February. Colder air will push in overnight dropping temps to mid to upper 30s by daybreak. On Monday, the high may barely push into the low 40s, and during the afternoon and evening hours, some snow showers and snow flurries may push in. You can see them pushing southeastward through Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota on the Upper Mississippi Valley REGIONAL RADAR COMPOSITE

Some areas that get a snow shower to linger for a little while might get a dusting to 1/2″, but I don’t think that everyone will get that.
