Rain/Sleet/Snow…. Thunder/Hail…. You Name It!

Weird and wacky weather across middle Tennessee this afternoon and evening.

The comments on the previous entry have been invaluable on the mix of precip and thunder reports! (Thanks, Ryan!! :-) )

The pockets of sleet/snow mixing with rain will continue through the early evening as temps drop a degree or two.

That means areas west of I-65 which never got above 34 -35 degrees could drop to near freezing as the sun sets around 5:12pm through mid-evening and that could make for slippery driving conditions.

There is a Winter Weather Advisory for areas northwest of Nashville not only for evening icing but snow showers could coat surfaces overnight into early Friday… again, especially northwest of Nashville.

Nashville south and east could drop to the mid 30s during the evening with pockets of sleet/snow mix trying to coat the ground in spots but I believe the temp will actually go up a few degrees to near 40 by 9 - 10pm and we may have a few more thunderstorms which could produce pockets of hail.

From Nashville east lows should stay at 35 degrees plus so early morning snow showers may coat surfaces but roads should remain mainly wet. BUT BE CAREFUL… it will be tricky knowing where the dividing line is.

Snow showers could last on and off until noonish… especially east of Nashville on Friday. Not expecting significant accumulation but temps and winds will be cold… about 38 degrees for the high with a cold west wind at 15 to 20mph.

Please keep posting the conditions where you live… don’t forget to say where that is!! Thanks in advance!

We are back to a all RAIN event for the next few minutes… Temp is holding right at 32.9.. The ice is starting to accumulate once again the pines and evergreens here. They haven’t had much time to melt today because our temps have been so cold. Im thinking a few of these will come down tonight with the amount of precip were talking about. Ive already been bust cutting trees and limbs out of our yard from this mornings event.. Quote “If you don’t like the weather in Tennessee, wait 10 minutes..”

That is true though. The rain is great. Not as bad as it was on Tuesday when trees got uprooted. I hope it changes to snow/sleet, but I don’t see it because it’s supposed to be 33 according to WTVF-5.

The following counties are the ones so far closed for tomorrow.

We will update this list as it becomes available to us.

  30. Matt5797 said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Too much rain at one time is not a good thing either. Saturated ground can lead to root rot and makes it easier for trees to get uprooted in strong winds. So its not a total blessing. Who knows what will happen tonight, its really up in the air right now.

  31. Charles said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Yeah they haven’t updated it but if you look on the watches map on the NOAA site, it shows Davidson, Sumner, Williamson, etc. counties.

  33. Ifiok said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:49 pm

To Matty5797, I was just referring to the rain. Of course it’s never good when you get storm damage. I think this snow thing once again is overblown like it always is here. Not much will happen here in Metro Davidson County. At least that’s what I think.

  34. School Closings said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:50 pm

The following counties are now closed for tomorrow due to sleet/snow/and ice.

    DECATUR COUNTY

  35. Matt5797 said,

Oh yeah, I understand Ifiok. Yep SPC has us under it, they may just be lost in space somewhere. Wrap around moisture may make a decent impact.

  36. on January 31st, 2008 at 5:53 pm

It looks as tho there starting to slowly figure out whats going on. I also must note that White Bluff is at 33 degrees but heavy rain, with brief sleet/hail at times. Winds are very light, calm almost. It looks as if this is going to be a weather history maker for the most weather types in a 12 hour period. LOL

  37. Sharon said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Sleet/rain has started in southern Franklin county, our temps are down to 44 degrees. Reported this to NWS HUN and they told me to expect dropping temps for rest of evening.

Will check conditions again later this evening so you have some fresh data up there.

Matt5797, I figure you have seen some of the write ups for the Monday/Tuesday event when I saw the bit about trees being up rooted. Drought followed by severe weather, it will happen.

  38. on January 31st, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Ummm these south winds REALLY need to calm down.. Its warmer now than it has been all day!! Its 35 degrees with rain.. UGHHH WERE HEADING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!

  39. Danny in the Boro said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Ok, I see the new advisory areas now. Thanks Colby for the link. I’ll tell you, it’s not sleeting or anything here in Murfreesboro, but the temp has gone from 42 to 37 in the last hour or so and it is pouring down rain and COLD. A miserable night to be out, to say the least…

  40. on January 31st, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Yeah there here to cut down my tree. Well an emergency part, where we can get our cars in the drive way. How Awesome. Better late than never.

  41. Chris said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 5:59 pm

On the east side of Cookeville, it’s still like 45 degrees, but I can see a snow/sleet/rain mix!

  42. Chris said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:01 pm

and I have to say that the south wind was blowing all day, and the temps appear to be going on a normal up and down curve, not raising in temps. the high was 50 degrees where I’m sitting today! even though it was about 45 in town for some reason, and I’m slightly elevated from town!

  43. on January 31st, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Ok just checked the weather. Its up to 35, It seems as tho the wind picked up in a matter of minutes. All rain still

  44. mike said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:03 pm

as always the case here in middle tn.

no moisture = freezing temps for days.

Moisture = All of a sudden it gets too warm to snow.

    what a curse..

  45. Colby in Goodlettsville said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:04 pm

yeah checking in on the temperature every 4 minutes for the next few hours is going to be pointless.. its only going to frustrate you - its warming up.. this batch of moisture isn’t really the one i’d be concerned with - its just going to be rain.. but check the temps later on tonight/tomorrow morning when the wrap-around approaches, and then we can start going LOCO for SNOW!

  46. Colby in Goodlettsville said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:05 pm

these advisories, at least for middle tennessee in my opinion.. aren’t for this very moment.. they are preparing you for tomorrow morning - which i think will be a MESS!

According to the Weather channel site, it’s 38 degrees and rain here in Hermitage. They’re predicting 37 as a low. If this happens, then no snow for us. Oh well.

  49. on January 31st, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Smart Idea Colby about the temperature. Everyone just leave it be until later tonight, it might make the stress of wondering if its going to snow later on, go away. Well Im outta here for a hour or so. Well I thin so anyways.

  50. on January 31st, 2008 at 6:11 pm

What is the National Weather Service Website. Im confused. Is this advisory effecting Nashville, because on Weather.gov or Noaa is not showing it.

  51. Charles said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Hey Matthew, go to Storm Prediction Center and on the map, press WWA and it will show the counties in pink.

  52. Cameron said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Called NWS Nashville. The advisories will go in effect at 10pm-12am. They are just getting ready to issue them. looks like the wrap around moisture is gonna get us.

  53. WeatherDudeB said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:20 pm

That map is sometimes outdated. Refer our local weather office for latest. The national maps are often outdated several hours.

  54. Matt5797 said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Sharon, it was not drought caused, it was watered daily. The heavy rain made soil elastic and allowed to wind to blow it sideways. At least that is what happened in my case, in others cases, I would say snapping trees may very well be drought caused.

  55. WeatherDudeB said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:21 pm

    Thanks Cameron

  56. Cameron said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Hey guys they corrected it for now. They will re-issue it if that wrap around moisture gets here. Like I said look for that between 10pm-12am.

  57. Chris said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 6:25 pm

It went back to all rain and is mixing again with snow, going back and forth. The temperature dropped from 45 to now 42 in about 30 minutes when the rain started, in east Cookeville.

Hey a loyal person that reports, I forgot the name, sorry, made a forum. I just tested it out. You can go check it out. The good thing, is that you can post pictures in your replys if you have an IMG code. Now Im not sure about HTML and stuff and other codes, but if you use Photobucket, the last of the 4 codes that they offer you on your pictures, the IMG code, showed up in the forum. How Awesome. Check it out, maybe we can make it something in the future.

Besides, people have to go to Nashvillewx before they go to your site. However like I said, don’t over do it. You can’t stur up a lot of people by doing so. Now back to the weather…

No one has ever said we were gonna have a snow event tonight. It’s been plainly stated since this stuff started that if we had snow, it would be later. Let’s all calm down and see what happens later, when it’s supposed to happen. :)

Well if anything is happing at around 6:00 to 7:30 in my county they will close schools no matter what the road conditions are like!! So if we can get the mositure and temps at the right time, then I’m in great shape for no school tomorrow! Wish the chimes and howling of the SE wind would stop though!!

Advice to ALL students who are reading this blog…….DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!…PLAN ON BEING IN SCHOOL!!….This way if your school isn’t closed, then you’re prepared…and if it is, then you can go play without having to worry about schoolwork…. :)

By the way, my gut instinct/experience (32 years in weather) tells me you’ll all be going in the morning!

    I hope I’m wrong! :)

Snow is heading north of Tennessee. Low is farther west and north than expected. Little to nothing prolly unless we get eastward movement.

  142. news2 low ratings said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

couple of counties in the southwest part of Md TN already closed. Not sure why unless they have leftover ice from the morning, although that is unlikely with the rise in temps. If you live north and/or west of Nashville, your chances of being out of school Friday go up. Temps aren’t forecast to drop below freezing for the most part.

  143. Matt5797 said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 10:34 pm

It is unlikely that many schools will be out unless a drastic temperature change occurs. Most places will around 32.5 and above. Bummer, huh? Ironic how WAA (Warm Air Advection) makes kids go “WAA.”

  145. news2 low ratings said,

Seems as if many counties are perhaps jumping the gun, but then again since most systems build in 10-12 days a year, why not use them. My kid got out in Williamson COunty because of problems around Fairview. Not a drop of moisture at my house in Spring Hill until around noon.

  146. Tracie said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Maury County is one that will not jump the gun they take their time when it comes to snow days.

FREEZING AND FROZEN PRECIPITATION MAY BECOME AN ISSUE TOWARD 4 AM

SYSTEM WORK INTO THE AREA FROM THE WEST. SNOWFALL ACCUMULATION

AROUND 1 INCH IS STILL POSSIBLE IN THE ADVISORY AREA LATE TONIGHT

    AND FRIDAY MORNING.

I’m not giving up hope yet!!

  150. WeatherDudeB said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm

I would not say all is lost. But the low is further west and north then what I expected. I would not totally discount this system yet, but things do not look very healthy right now. We will watch it over night though.

  151. ComputerizedWeather said,

    on January 31st, 2008 at 11:19 pm

I’m sure this discussion has been had in here many times before, but do you not think that with all the high-tech computerized equipment the mets have now days, that the weather could not be predicted more accurately?? I mean, I can remember back to days that the forecasters just used the weather maps and a black marker and did a better job predicting the weather than these computer modules do. So as I go to bed:

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord for snow to bring

    Amen
