Rain and Storms Today

Rain and thundershowers will slow things down this morning. We’ve had a few severe thunderstorm warnings early today, mainly for small hail and frequent lightning.

Temperatures this morning are in the 40s and should reach the lower 50s this afternoon. Not the most conducive conditions for severe weather, but the dynamical energy (the wind) with this system is impressive. Dewpoints are only in the 40s, and the storms around today are expected to be “elevated”. Hail and heavy downpours are usually the main threats with that type of storm.

If there are additional severe thunderstorm warnings we’ll crawl that information on the bottom of the screen on News 2.

The rain will leave Middle Tennessee early this evening, so it will be dry if you’ve got plans tonight. The weekend ahead looks dry and cool with highs in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees.

Could we see a few sprinkles or flurries on New Year’s Eve? I think so. The coldest air of the season is expected to hit on January 1st (Tuesday) and stick around the first few days of 2008. Lows in the teens, highs in the 30s? Bring it on!

why even put flurries in the forcast thats retarded. you shouldnt tell us anything until its 100 percent chance of 2 inches or more of snow, then yall would still miss it.

I think some of you don’t really understand what forecasting is. They make the best prediction they can with the information available to them at the time. That information comes from just one model, but numerous sources. There is no magic crystal ball that shows what is going to happen a week out.

Look at Denver. They were only expecting flurries on Christmas day and got a foot of snow.

By the way, the NWS also has a small chance of snow in their forecast for Monday night and Tuesday.

I do not think many people understand the very basics of weather. Also many people need to understand that during a very active pacific jet, shortwaves are lining themselves up one by one. This is very hard for the models to grasp. If we had a unlimited buget then more model data could be used and better measurements could be made. Tues and wed WILL see highs in the lowers 30’s if not colder. The orgin of the airmass as well as very strong CAA will bring temps down here. Low level moisture as it does every year will hang around and produce light snow showers. Intersting jump on the 18gfs.500mb-vort makes a interesting change, tonights 00 run will have better data. We really cannot nick pick this since its not going to be a big event. What one can hope for is a moderate snowfall for a bit that could leave a dusting to a 1″. Highland rim could see upto a 1″ with areas east with more. Thats about as easy and logical as you can put it.

Also medium range models are having a hard time. The pacific and Nina does not make it easy. We do know there will be moderation in temps after this cold shot. How long the warm-up last is the question. Euro Weeklies did not show much hope for Jan. But dont be too sad, this is hope down the road :)
