A Great Night For The Trick or Treaters

halloween-10-31.jpg

If you’ve brought kids trick or treating before, you know that when it is cold it is not as pleasant of an experience. On the other hand, when it is warm, the kids in the heavier costumes tend to get overheated. Well, tonight, is perfect. With temps falling through the 60s, and a southerly breeze, it should be mild, but not too warm.

To get us all in the “spirit”, Lisa Patton will be live from the Mt. Juliet area on News 2 at 4, 4:30, 5:00 and 6:00pm.

Everyone have a great time, and be careful!

Nice Halloween Ahead

highs 10 31

We’ll have the warmest day of the work week today as we get in to the low 70’s under mostly sunny skies. You might notice a steady south wind and slightly higher humidity, we’ll have a few low-level fair weather clouds this afternoon. Tonight just about perfect for the kids making the candy rounds; temperatures will fall down through the 60’s under fair skies. Becoming overcast overnight as a cold front moves over middle Tennessee. There will be a little drizzle tomorrow morning during the commute but the main effect will be cooler temperatures. As the skies start clearing by late morning we’ll have highs only in the low 60’s along with a good north wind. Great weather tonight for Halloween though.

Could see another foggy start in spots

The fall color was shrouded in fog on Old Hickory Lake Tuesday morning:

Photo compliments of Mark Fagan, of course.

Another chilly overnight could bring more foggy spots early Wednesday morning.

Nevertheless, sunshine and a warm-up to the low 70s will leave great weather for Trick-or-Treaters on Halloween evening. No need to cover the costume.. temps should fall through the 60s through about 7:30pm. Upper 50’s until 9pm.

Not bad for the last day of October!

Oldest Known Picture Of A Tornado

oldest-tornado-pic.jpg

Our special projects producer, Jeff Davidson, ran into this picture from the NOAA Photo Library. It was taken on August 28, 1884 22 miles southwest of Howard, SD. Not only does it show two smaller tornadoes on either side of the main one, you can see a strong updraft right over the top of the larger tornado. Foggy & Frosty Start Followed By A Beautiful October Day

lows-10-30.jpg

lows2-10-30.jpg

Lowest temps taken from hourly reports this morning.

As you can see above, Nashville (the airport) bottomed out at 40 degrees (due to the asphalt and concrete of the city) while the outlying areas were much colder. Cookeville even dropped to 29. Besides a good frost in most areas, fog dropped visibilities down to as low as .15 mile.

Now that the fog has burned off, we are in for a great day. The high should be near 70 this afternoon in the sunshine. Tonight, lows should bottom out in the low 40s with some patchy fog, followed by another great day and evening for Trick or Treaters on Wednesday.

There is another front on the map that should come through Thursday morning, dropping temps to only low 60s for highs Thursday afternoon with a brisk north wind. Unfortunately, there will only be a slight chance for a few light rain showers early Thursday morning.

Cold Start to A Nice Day

Coldest morning of the Fall season so far as temperatures are below freezing up on the plateau and in the mid-30’s around Nashville and Murfreessboro. You’ll see some fog around but by afternoon wonderful weather in store for us with highs reaching into the low 70’s. Lots of sunshine today with a little bit of a southeast wind. That wind will hold the temperatures up tonight a few degrees warmer than this morning keeping us out of the frost/freeze catagories. I don’t expect another night near freezing until at least another week and a half. Just about perfect weather in store for us for Halloween night with temperatures dropping through the 60’s during the evening. Don’t forget that we don’t return to standard time (Fall back) until this Sunday so it won’t be getting dark till later (sunset at 5:52p), the first time in a long time Trick or Treaters have walked around in Daylight Savings Time.

Frost Advisory For All, Freeze Advisory For Eastern Counties

frost-advisory-10-29.jpg

Time to cover the sensitive plants, or move the potted ones inside, if you can. Temps tonight will range from about 30-37 across Middle Tennessee with the coldest temps in the eastern counties. To learn why frost can form when the temp is above 32 read the previous entry.

So How Does Frost Form When The Temperature Is Still Avove 32 Degrees?

This is a repost from October, 2006 regarding the same subject:

Many of you have asked, so here’s the answer:

As you might know, the earth radiates its heat back towards space during a clear night. The ground is a solid object, and solid objects can actually get colder than the air surrounding them due to the radiational cooling.

A perfect example of that is your car. Have you ever touched the roof of your car on a clear night? It’s colder than the air. This is one reason why frost forms on the roofs and windshields of cars, and other solid objects such as the ground, even when the temperature is above 32.

Lows This Morning

It sure was cold this morning! At daybreak lows were in the 30s outside of Nashville (40 F in the city). Cookeville was the coldest at 31 degrees. Temperatures fell to freezing (32 F) in Paris and McMinnville. Savannah and Lewisburg weren’t far behind; each had a low of 33 degrees. Cold Mornings, Sunny Days

We walk up this morning with lows in the upper 30’s in the basin, right at freezing to the east in the higher elevations. After a week of rain last week we expect a week of dry weather. Highs today will rebound up into the mid to upper 60’s. Tonight we expect the coldnest night of the work week with lows getting into the 20’s up on the plateau and ending the growing season. However in the Nashville area and most of the basin we expect lows tomorrow morning in the mid to upper 30’s; those flowers should keep going. For the rest of the work week we’ll have lows in the 40’s instead. Below is the freezing warning that is in effect for Cookeville, Crossville, Celina, McMinnville and Spencer.
