April 16th, 1998

On April 16, 1998…Lawrence County experiences the first F5 tornado in Tennessee’s history. Nashville is hit by 3 tornadoes, including an F3, which strikes downtown for the first time in more than 65 years. A total of 10 tornadoes are confirmed across Middle Tennessee. Surprisingly, there are only 4 fatalities across the mid state, with 105 injuries. Baseball-size hail is reported northwest of Ashland City (Cheatham County), damaging 35 to 50 homes. This is the 10th largest tornado outbreak in mid-state history.

Thanks to the Nashville NWS for this report.

I looked at that gfs loop. It shows the weather being warm for the rest of April, with some rain storms thought the month too. Has the hurricane prediction graph come out yet? Tells how many tropical storms, hurricanes, major hurricanes, ect are forecasted for 2007. Man, did they miss it big last year.

Yeah, I remember this outbreak like it was yesterday. It was about mid-day here in Centerville, I was at my grandmothers for the day. I was 11 years old. Channel 2 had their city cam on at the time the tornado was touching down. What a sight that was! It was a terrible day. I think that is the time I become really interested in meteorology. It was amazing to come over the horizon on I-40 and see all the boards and plastic over most of the windows at Tennessee Tower and all the other big buildings. But that is definatly a day I will not forget.
