Wet Roads Could Freeze Tonight

This second round of snow that has been pushing across Middle Tennessee this afternoon has had trouble sticking in many areas (exceptions north of Nashville and east Middle Tennessee). However, it has not allowed the roads to dry. Once the sun goes down temps will fall below freezing. That, along with the removal of the filtered sunlight hitting the roads, will cause any moisture to freeze over on the roads causing treacherous driving conditions. Secondary roads will be especially vulnerable to this.

It will be near sunset before this round of snow ends in Nashville, later to the east. And there could be another round later tonight.

I say that if you don’t have to drive tonight, don’t. The problems will be worse in the outlying counties.

Everything is good here.. Temps are finally falling to around 33-34. These wet roads are going to be VERY dangerous tonight! Please!!, If you do not have to get out, DONT! Tonight these roads are going to be like skating rinks, i’m calling into work in Nashville because, I leave at 9:00 pm and come back home around 2:30am.. The roads are going to be too bad. When the roads freeze over, there is not much salt can do for it. DONT GET OUT!

i agree with ryan, that’s a good idea temps are around 33-34 degrees here in my area as well. roads are unbelievably wet and will be a whole lot of ice tonight making like davis said TREACHEROUS driving. and again with temps falling and snow continuing it appears more snow covered roads and snow accumulation may become an issue as well through tonight…

    MIDDLE TENNESSEE 1-2″

    NORTHERN CUMBERLAND PLATEAU 2″

SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE- LITTLE OR NO ACCUMULATION ANOTHER UPDATE LATER.

MODERATE FAT FLAKE SNOW FALLING HERE.

  4. Ryan in Hickman says:

Middle TN will contend with one more round of snow, that is currently in Northwest Tn. And after that only problems will be the ice on the roads.

  5. aaron in davidson says:

HEAVY SNOW IN LAKEWOOD BIG FLAKES.

  6. Anonymous says:

just 3 degrees cooler and we would have had 3 inches easily here in south Nashville

  7. Verbatim says:

It snowed nice and heavily here for a while but temps were just about 1.5 degrees too warm for it to stick on many surfaces. We would have easily had at least 1.5″ or more had the temp been 32 degrees to start with.

However, in the past hour we have dropped to exactly 32 degrees here in Manchester and things are VERY wet with some light snow still falling. With the temps still dropping and a low of 22 degrees…things will get VERY slick obviously. Drive safe.

  8. Verbatim says:

Another little band of moisture is producing some heavy snowfall here again…this time it’s actually accumulating =)

  9. Cameron K. says:

Some snow here all we ended up with was a dusting.

  11. rikke in dekalb says:

wow, it is snowing big time here in southern dekalb county. The temp is about 32-33 degrees. Does anyone know if there is another round of the white stuff later tonight?

  12. Verbatim says:

Here’s a pic of the snow accumulating on top of the car. (Click my name to view)

  13. Cameron Fry says:

hey, Cam in Mobile here. couldn’t make it back to nashvegas for this round of snow? i’m hearing from fam and friends that snow totals are probably b/t .5-1″ i’m sure in a very few isolated areas there’s a little more. what’s the word my TN peeps?

  14. Ryan in Hickman says:

Cameron, The word here is stay home tonight. Roads are icing up really quick here. Salt truck have been sent out numerous times already. But last night we had heavy snow about an inch, then this morning it got up to 39 here and now its back to 32 with wet roads with flurries flying around now. Thats my word, thats probably how everyones day went..

  15. candill says:

Ok, I love the snow that has been falling, but it’s not really what I was hoping for. Anyway with the warmer temps for next week many people are thinking that this snow we are getting will be the last. With about 5 weeks to go before spring, I was wondering what some of you were thinking. Will the warm up mean anything? What’s the long range models reading? Is next week’s warmth here to stay? Just curious on your thoughts.

  16. Shell says:

We just came back to east Hickman Co. from the centerville area.. we passed a salt truck on Hwy. 100. It wasn’t a brine truck this time it was slinging rock salt we could see the spreader. It hit the car windshield like rocks. The wind has gotten much stronger and we are having some moderate snow with temps at about 28 degrees. The roads still seemed wet but the spray off the road was freezing on the windshield very quickly. I am glad we made it in before it got too dark. A friend’s brother runs a wrecker service and is seeing his calls increase as time goes by. The backroads are a mess!

I am glad to be safely in where it is warm for the night.

  17. Hey Mike here from the Upper Cumberland/Cumberland Plateau…

I have measured 2.5 inches here in my yard this evening.

I drove from Manchester to Cookeville via Hwy 70 thru McMinnville and there was snow falling in Manchester with no accumulation…by the time we got to McMinnville, they had a dusting…Sparta had more when we got up there…and by the time we hit Cook-vegas, the roads are snow covered and hazardous (in some places)…should it continue to snow through the night, travelling here will be tough going.

  18. Cameron K. says:

There might be some snow on the back side of a system coming throu on the 25th. that’s about it as far as snow

  19. aaron in davidson says:

very wet roads are a sheet of ice here in the lakewood area of davidson county. as well moderate to heavy snow continuing with the driveway, roof, and yard accumulating with the snow. stay tuned and let me make myself very clear… STAY OFF THE ROADS! THEY ARE DANGEROUSLY ICY AND ARE GETTING SNOWED ON WHICH IS MAKING THINGS WORSE SO THINGS ARE GETTING BAD NOW BUT LET ME TELL YA THAT BY 8 OR 9 O CLOCK THINGS WILL BE UNBELIEVABLE PROBABLY WITH TO MUCH WRECKS TO EVEN TAKE CARE OF SO AGAIN STAY OFF ROADS. IF YOU DO GO SOMEWHERE THEN BUNDLE UP THAT WIND WILL CUT YOU INTO.

  20. Nick says:

Snowing moderately in Mount Juliet. Snow began accumalating on elevated surfaces about 45 to 60 minutes ago. Snow began accumalating on roadways about 15 to 20 minutes ago. Backroads will especially be vunerable.

In reference to advisories. If I am not mistaken, the point of an advisory is to make people aware of trecherous road conditions. If this is the case, I am confused as to why the snow advisory was cancelled. When that happened (and I heard about it on the radio), I assumes things would be ok and continued my errands I origionally planned to put off. I wish I had stayed home. The public needs to be made aware of the road conditions. Is there a generic travelers advisory that can be issued?

  21. Verbatim says:

Started snowing moderately here again not too long ago…temps at 30 ~ 31 degrees. I just checked the roads and they’re still wet, but I’m sure all that will turn into a sheet ice before long. Nice coating on the ground, too.

  22. greengrass says:

Ryan in Hickman, Heavy snow is not an inch! Heavy snow is at least 6 inches plus in meteorolgical terms. Please do not refer to what we have as heavy snow. I just want to clarify for the folks that have experienced “heavy Snow”. Thanks

  23. Verbatim says:

Well considering the past few winters in Middle,TN, an inch or two is pretty heavy snow. lol =Þ

  24. Matt5797 says:

By the way, salt does prevent roads from becoming ice down to a certain temperature. Ionic salts are placed on the roads (NaCl in our case) and actually lowers the freezing point of water. pretty cool, huh? Anyways, I think the dangerous road hype is a little overdone. Not that roads won’t be dangerous but I don’t think roads will be all that dangerous. If people will drive slowly and not slam on the breaks if they see ice, everyone should be fine. The exception should be the Cumberland Plateau where snow is probably on the roads as Mike said. Just drove home from Nashville to Hendersonville and roads are pretty good as of now.

  25. Repory in Antioch says:

Dang ol’ talkin’ bout’ no dang’ ol’ ice!!!!! Dang ol’ was takin’ out da’ garbage, and da’ car dang’ ol has ice on it!!!!!! Dang ol’ sidewalks icy, dang ol’ road has dang ol’ icy strip in da’ middle!!!! Dang ol’ everything turnin’ to da’ ice!!!!

  26. Matt5797 says:

I think snow bursts in even non-accumulating snows can sometimes be considered “heavy snow” by NWS reporting stations. “Heavy snow” in terms of accumulation is a different story. Middle Tennessee rarely sees snow that meets that criteria.

  27. Boomhauer has been here!

Had some graupel and sleet around about two hours ago…I mean it COMPLETELY changed over to sleet for a time…

  28. JD says:

Hey Ryan, is it snowing again over in Hickman County? What kind of accumulation are you currently getting? Looks like a shower over your area headed here to Columbia… so far we have barely anything but it looks now like the temps are cool enough…

  29. Matt5797 says:

Dang ol’ dang man, whats up daggum ol’ Boomhauer.

  30. aaron in davidson says:

my driveway here is continuing to get white my car that recently had water earlier is total ice! and it is nicely gathering in the yard as well. snow that is. roads look wet i’ll go see but ice before long. BE CAREFUL AND BUNDLE UP IF GOING OUT AND ABOUT.

  31. Sara says:

greengrass,Why do you care if someone refers to us having heavy snow? I think they were talking about the way the snow was falling, the density of the snow etc,not the depth of the snow.Mind your own business and quit correcting people.

  32. Sandy says:

I work as a pet sitter serving 3 counties. I’ve been driving in this stuff off and on since 5:00 this morning. I thought it was bad earlier when it took me an hour to get out of my steep driveway. Well I just got back from my evening rounds and this morning was nothing compared to what I’m seeing out there tonight.

I started my rounds earlier, trying to get done before the streets turn to ice. No such luck. By 5:30 many Cheatham county back roads were already a sheet of ice. Here in Robertson county streets are also turning to ice fast.

To those who think the roads won’t be all that dangerous, think again. They already are. No matter how careful you are, these winding hilly backroads are treacherous, especially if you’re driving a car. A truck would come in handy right about now!

If you don’t have to be out tonight, don’t go. I dread having to go back out there early tomrrow morning.

  33. DAVE IN SPRING HILL says:

hello all.. I am in spring hill and all I can say is its a mess out there…AS OF 630PM TEMPS ARE BELOW 32 AND THE PONDS OF WATER ON THE ROADS HAVE NOW BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO ICE…IF YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE ON THE ROADS TONIGHT DO NOT BE FOOLISH.. EVEN MY DRIVEWAY IS COMPLETELY ICED OVER NOW WHERE IT WAS JUST WET B4 SUNSET. IF YOU ARE ON THE ROADS TAKE EXTREME CAUTION!!!! I DO NOT FEEL THE NWS HAS DONE ENOUGH TO PUT THAT MESSAGE OUT…

  34. Clay says:

Good job News 2! I measure EXACTLY 1.0″ of snow at my South Nashville home.

  35. Gina says:

We have 2.5 to 3 inches at my house in DeKalb Co. I live out towards Short Mtn. - close to the Cannon Co line. It is still snowing pretty good here at this moment and the wind is blowing alot of it around at ground level. Temp is 28.8

    ~Gina

  36. Heavy Snow, YES that is what we was recieving a while ago.. Im not the National Weather Service, I dont put out HEAVY SNOW WARNINGS. I’m sorry that this offended you in such a great way. I am deeply sorry :( Greengrass must not be from the south. Heavy snow to us is a burst of flurries, and I will continue to call it heavy snow until I move away from here. THANKS!

Anyways, we had HEAVY SNOW about an hour ago, interstates are patchy with ice and snow, and backroads are just incredible.. I have a temp here of 26, and a few flurries flying by. I guess this is all for the Hickman County area tonight. STAY OFF THE ROADS!

  37. Chris says:

Hey guys, there’s a good 3.5 or 4 inches in the Cookeville area, the snow is packed on the ground and it’s still coming down at a good clip. Be Careful Everyone!!

  38. Verbatim says:

Another burst of snow again over Manchester about 15 - 20 minutes ago…this is what our road looks like. (I know the picture is kind of dark, but you get the picture =)

I will put a another pic. up here soon — up to this point we’ve seen a good 1/2″ to 1″ in some spots.

    Current temp. ~ 29 degrees

  39. Cameron K. says:

Thompson’s Station got a rock!- Charlie Brown

We got about a half inch, was hoping for some more. (sigh)

  40. Anonymous says:

All this talk about “heavy” snow makes me laugh. Yes, living in middle TN doesn’t provide us with much of an opportunity to see much snow, but let me tell you…if you want to see real heavy snow, go spend a few days up in Michigan! I’ve never seen (or driven through) so much snow in my life!!

  41. Boomhauer says:

Dang ol’ talkin’ bout’ no dang ol’ ice and da’ snow dang ol’ all da’ frozen on da’ dang ol’ roads, yo man dang ol’ be careful
