Here’s the view of a lake effect snow band in Western New York from yesterday, February 7th. Oswego Parish has seen 77″ of snow in the past few days as west winds sweep arctic air across a moisture-laden Lake Ontario. The narrow bands of heavy snow that develop downwind of the lake are convective in nature and occasionally yield observations of “thundersnow” - a good indication of very impressive snowfall rates that can surpass 5″ per hour. Cool stuff if you like winter weather!

Quite quite glad to have escaped the icy clutches of the north… The snow there was unbelievably potent, sometimes piling as high as three-story windows. …And not once were schools cancelled. Plus everyone had to walk to school which was even more of a drag.

Have to say it, but it looks like our big snow chances are gone. Our coldest airmass has passed us by, and soon it will be time for the warmup to spring to begin.
My Dad got stuck in some Thundersnow over the weekend (the ‘Rents are in Western NY). He was on a parkway at a standstill because of a whiteout when he saw bright flashes and heard thunder. He said he would have enjoyed it more if he was able to watch from the living room and not the car.
Apparently there is no forecast for Jason to complain about, so it is good to see he can always find a way to be so negative.

I remember several years ago we had a pretty decent snowfall on Valentine’s Day. What’s the outlook for snow in Mid Tn in the future? Ready would like to see a signicant snowfall before the end of winter, but if not, bring on Spring.

Chattanoga received over 21″ if I remember. I forgot what Nashville got as I wasn’t living in Nashville at the time. Some of you long time locals might remember?
