The large-scale weather pattern has been a cold one for the Eastern United States the past couple of weeks. In Nashville 10 of the past 11 days brought below-average high temperatures. It’s usually in the middle to upper 40s this time of year, but we’ve been 10 to 20 degrees colder on a routine basis. The biggest deviation was Monday (February 5th) when Nashville’s high of 28 degrees measured a full 21 degrees below the thirty-year average.

It’s been a streaky winter so far. Early December was cold, before a long stretch of mild weather persisted through the first half of January. All the days from January 1st through the 15th were above average. Since January 16th…18 of the past 23 days (78%) have been below average. We will see some moderation this weekend through early next week, when highs are in the 40s… Right now the models suggest more cold air and the possibility of a few snow showers by the middle of next week, so we’re not done with the cold air just yet.
