Remember How Mild It Was Earlier This Winter?

It’s amazing how the weather can turn on a dime! Last December and most of January we all were asking, “Where is winter?”

December’s average high was: 57.3 (7.9 degrees above normal).
January’s average high was: 50.3 (4.7 degrees above normal).

December’s mean temperature, averaging highs and lows was: 46.4 (5.9 degrees above normal).
January’s mean temperature, averaging highs and lows was: 41.7 (4.9 degrees above normal).

During the last ten days we have only gotten above 40 degrees three times. Today’s high will be the midnight temp of 54 degrees, but our afternoon highs will struggle through the low 30s.

    Good Morning Davis,

I moved up here last yr 2 weeks after the hail storms hit spring hill and I was wondering how often does this occur in Middle TN.. I am not talking small hail..I am talking major severe weather outbreak

  2. Anonymous says:

When will spring be here? And could we have a severe weather outbreak this year?

  3. Chris says:

What winter means to us now. Here are the snow totals the last 4 years:

    2003-04 1.3
    2004-05 .T
    2005-06 1.8
    this year
    so far 1.8
    combined -
    4.9

That sucks!!! last 4 yrs combined not even 5 inches! And I’m not so sure the next 4 years is going to be much better. Hate to be neggy, but it is not fair. I miss the good ole days when we used to get a couple of good snows each year. Where is Mister Snowman? We need you!

  4. Tracy says:

ever since Bush got re-elected our winter snowfall totals have suffered greatly…I’m just sayin’.

  5. Jason says:

OMG Tracy = left. Please gosh please if you going to say something please use the RIGHT side of your brain. The LEFT is, has been, and always will be an @$$.

Tracy,I am sorry but that was about the most stupid thing to say about a human being the blame for mother nature, come on where are you from,California perhaps??

  7. Chris says:

I think our window of opportunity for snow this year is closed. After the next couple of cold and dry days, it’s going to be too warm for snow. And there may not be anymore cold after that. I don’t understand why this keeps happening to us! Every year, same song, same ugly verse! I’m fed up. I gaurantee you next year will be the same thing. It is GONE!!

  8. Chris says:

Another thing. Let me know if any of you know about any job openings in West Virginia or Eastern KY. If it’s never going to snow good here again, might as well live somewhere where it still is.

    Tracy: lol :) haha.

  11. Ben says:

Might want to try Parish, NY. They reside in the Lake Effect area and are currently in the middle of a 5 foot snow with 1-2 more feet on the way.

  12. CASUAL READER says:

OK OK ALREADY THIS IS NOT A PRESIDENTAL DEBATE LETS KEEP IT ABOUT WEATHER.

  13. Ward says:

Interesting snow info posted by chris. I was looking back at yearly snow totals since records began in the 1800s. It looks to me that this is the worst 4 year stretch EVER! I’m serious, we’ve never had a 3 or 4 year stretch this bad.

  14. Cameron K. says:

I hate el nino! I hope we get at least one more good snowfall this winter.

  15. Ahhh, oh well if it dont snow this year, there is always hope for next year.. Next year my be our roller coaster ride back UP the snow ride.. If you get what im saying.. LOL

Anybody notice the disagreement between the european depiction and the gfs on Anybody notice the disagreement between the European depiction and the gfs on Tuesday? The European thinks(shows) the low further south near Augusta Georgia, while the gfs has the low further north like Atlanta this could mean the difference between rain or (SNOW) I don’t have the link for the European this only the gfs. I bet Lisa is right, it will probably be to warm for snow, just and observation.

  19. 2/7 GFS Analysis and 2/15 snow possibilities discussion. Nice Read!

  20. Kinda’ quiet on the weather front!

  21. Cameron K. says:

I agree Clay, it really does depend on the track of the low if you want snow, as long as it stays to the south around Augusta GA we should be good, of course it’s not set in stone and there could be other factors that affect it latter on, let’s hope not. I see the same scenario on Tuesday the 13th except it(gfs) want’s to put the low around Atlanta, check 144 hr, the European shows it further south, I only saw it off a forecast so I don’t have the link. What do you think, also do you know a link for the European model?

Come on low give us snow!

Come on low give us snow!

Come on low give us snow!

  22. Right now, it appears to me that the Tuesday event will be rain. I haven’t checked the 0z yet, because they haven’t come out. The snow I was speaking of in my Analysis will be around the 15th. (Past the 7 day forecast)

  26. Don says:

hey snow lovers models are leaning more to snow on monday night and tuesday and it could be heavy the update will post tomorrow hope and pray that it holds out

  27. Kelly says:

It was sleeting just south of columbia near mount pleasant just about a minute ago. It was coming down pretty hard for a little while!!

  28. shaq725 says:

wow didnt see any in columbia

  29. shaq725 says:

wow if you look on the nws radar that would be some heavy snow occuring for a short amount of time if it was moist enough

  30. Anon… If you have any ideas or improvements, go to the site and send me a PM. I am open to any ideas!

  31. Moderate sleet falling in Hickman County right now.. very weird.

  32. Cameron K. says:

Don, I don’t see any great snow chances on monday day or tuesday, the gfs is putting the low around Atlanta Which means it will be an all rain event with some possible furries on the back side. I heard from a forecaster that the european model want’s to put the low further south. That may have changed.

Also Clay, the gfs model forecast has the low off in the alantic or do I have an outdated gfs forecast?

    http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/index_slp_m_loop.shtml

Make sure you fix the end of the link. It should say
    slp_m_loop.shtml

  33. Clay - MTWC, ETWC, WTWC Administrator says:

Cameron, try not to get confused. The models have been all over the place with this system. The 0z yesterday showed the low over Central Georgia. The 12z run showed the low IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. The 18z showed the low back over GA with a 3-6″ Snow over Middle TN. Now, this mornings 0z run show the over… aww forget it! I’m waiting for PSU to update their 0z runs. NOAA runs can be unpredictable.
