It Ain’t Snow:

Two separate storm cells dump hail in the Clarksville area: the first around 9:45pm, the second at 10:45pm, and another knocking at the door at 11:15pm.

The storms will probably lose some intensity as the front sinks south across middle Tennessee overnight but a heavy downpour, small hail and lightning possible here and there overnight.

Storms with Large Hail & Wind Possible Tuesday Night

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch until Midnight for areas west of Nashville.

Of course, the storm line will also cross Nashville and the rest of middle Tennessee and we will monitor it through the night.

Large hail and strong winds are the most likely threat with this line of storms which should move through during the late evening to overnight hours. Not everyone will receive severe weather but isolated incidents are possible.

Raindrops Sparse So Far Today, But Better Chances Late Today & Tonight

Radar 1030.jpg

Once again, we could really use some rain to wash the salt and brine off of the roads. So far today, the rain has been a disappointment, passing to our north and south. However, chances increase late this afternoon and tonight. We have a weak front that will move through tomorrow morning, and although it will only cool our night time temps down (daytime highs in 60s Wed!), it should help increase our rain chances overnight and into the morning.

Some Rain

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

We’ve got rain in the forecast today, maybe a few thunderstorms even this afternoon. The rain chances increase as we get later in the and evening. A mild start to the day with temperatures in the low 50’s. Because of the cloud cover and rain we’ll probably only get into the upper 50’s today. There is a slight risk of severe weather out to our west this afternoon, close to our western fringes so we’ll be watching StormTracker through the day. Rain chances increase tonight, we could end up with as much of a half of an inch of rain before the rain leaves the plateau tomorrow morning. A cold front is coming through tonight but tomorrow should be warm again, with a little sunshine we could get in the low 60’s. Below are the forecasted highs for today:

Severe Wx Awareness Week

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Middle Tennessee is currently in severe weather awareness week. The timing is pretty good as our seven day forecast depicts a transition from winter chill to spring-like warmth and thunderstorms by this weekend.

Read all about it from the Nashville NWS.

Tennessee Needs to Step it Up

Noboday want to lose to North Dakota, especially when the stakes are this high.

Flying High

I’ll continue to watch the weather with two feet planted firmly on the ground…

Paraglider caught in thunderstorm, whisked to 32,612 feet, lives to tell about it.

Not Spring Yet

Monday, February 19th, 2007

We’ll enjoy an entire workweek and weekend of above normal temperatures but keep in mind we still are in February with March still to come. The third month of the year has been known to bring some whopper snows; we’ll certainly see a couple more shots of winter cold before the trees turn green. In fact this is the how the long range GFS has the atmosphere set-up for the first Sunday in March:

Two Weeks Away.jpg

This would be a massive snow storm. Keep in mind the GFS has shown a couple of these in the long-range this winter hitting middle Tennessee and we haven’t gotten one yet. We’ll keep you posted. I’m more concerned right now about this coming weekend and Saturday afternoon. We’ve got a good chance for our first Spring storm outbreak…even though it’s not Spring just yet.

Some Snow, Some Flowers

This is what your backyard looks like when you have 6ft of snow over two days (this in Brewerton, NY outside of Syracuse via his sister-in-law Linda Bratjan in Allons):

Some flowers around Alexandria are a little confused on the season:

Notice the snowman’s pipe, this is Summitville (between McMinnville and Manchester) where Saturday’s snow was a little deeper than in the Nashville area.

Milder Monday Forecast

Monday, February 19th, 2007

It’s below freezing this morning. We think this will be the last sub-freezing morning this week. Our month-long bout of cold weather (26 of 34 days below normal…see below) has come to a close.

Highs will be in the 50s the next couple of days, courtesy of a southwest breeze that will be gusty this afternoon. A front will bring some showers on Tuesday, but no big cold snap to follow. Temperatures will reach the 60s by Thursday and Friday, with a few thunderstorms on Friday and this weekend.

We can kiss our cold pattern good-bye…it was fun while it lasted! There will be additional shots of chilly air over the next month or so, but nothing as prolonged as the last month.
