Everyone has been waiting to see the detailed flood maps which would show which areas would flood if the Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky catastrophically failed. Wilson County emergency planners released some of the maps of Wilson County to The Tennessean. Some of these maps also included parts of Eastern Davidson County parts and Sumner County. I have spent all day looking at them and wanted to share a few close ups of the Lakewood area along Old Hickory Blvd leading to Old Hickory. The areas in green are where the water would be under the worst case scenario, while the blue areas are for a lesser case scenario. I have a call into officials to clarify the exact definition of the two. The levels are plus or minus 15 ft.
Notice that the water comes up over Old Hickory Blvd. (St. Route 45) in Lakewood. The Hermitage Golf Course and many of the neighborhoods on both sides of Old Hickory Blvd. would be underwater. The Cumberland River bends around Lakewood and Old Hickory to the west, so the river is on both sides of them.
Remember, The Corps of Engineers have lowered Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, so if it failed now, the levels would be much lower than the worst case scenario (in green). However, if we had a week of heavy spring rains in Kentucky, Lake Cumberland could end up rising to dangerous levels.
I’ll be studying all ofthe flood maps as they are released, and will be ocassionally writing entries on nashvillewx.com showing you familiar areas that could be underwater much like I did when I studied the flooding maps from New Orleans after Katrina.

At the risk of angering every decent user of this blog, shouldn’t we have had an update on the impending snow/ice/rain storm instead of flood maps about something that “may” happen “sometime” in the future? I realize this is important info, but I would think it could wait until a day when there isn’t a pending storm. Doesn’t that warrant at least ONE post/update in the past 12 hrs? Just my $.02.

On another, weather related note, it IS fun wondering, every time we have a chance for wintry precip, WHICH WAY THE LOW WILL GO. Will there be enough precip, will there be enough cold air? What do the models say, what do the mets say? It is SO frustrating for a snow lover like me, but let’s all think about why we go back and fourth talking about it. IT’S FUN! It’s like playing the lottery in this part of the country, always being on the line… I HATE IT… BUT I LOVE IT!!!
I hope the dam doesn’t bust…it might freeze…

To the naysayers, when you have a high dollar asset sitting on the water and they talk about possible dam failure, it is in MY best interest to pay attention!

yes i think nashville and many areas of middle tenn. could recieve a couple of inches of snow by thursday morning. as lisa said at 4 and 5 this could be a dangerous case on the roads thursday morning and i would imagine that snowtracker school closings would as well be a good possibility with this weather event. the nws says this could be a winter storm for central middle tennessee.

I teach high school, so trust me, I’m all about knowing the latest forecast in regard to the snow; however, I think it’s slightly narrow-minded to believe that snow is the only event worth mentioning here. The dam is an interesting story, interesting enough to grab the attention of my 9th graders (THEY brought it up, in two different classes, when we were discussing the word ‘ramshackle’). I’m sure the WKRN folks will update the snow situation when, well, there’s something to update. I only recently stumbled upon this site, and I love reading the analyses (though some of the comments I could do without). This site gives the weather a lot more character than any other local station. Keep up the good work, and please please please make people register to post, preferably with confirmation required. I would hate to see this destroyed by idiocy and immaturity.
Just watching other local stations but as always come back to my favorite one NEWS 2!! But one station in particular said they were thinking earlier on in the week that it would be too warm to support all snow Thursday but now they are saying it should be all snow and sleet on Thursday.. Woo Hoo!! That rude blog entry was awful, and Id give anything in this world if they would catch who was behind it! That is uncalled for! I hardly ever really blog on here, unless its is for very extreme weather like severe thunderstorms or a good snow event, but I wanted to say I do read and watch all the time on here, and I think you all are great! Ive been watching you all since I was a kid, hoping and praying every night in the winter youd say snow and we would get out of school! Im 31 now so its been awhile! How does it look on the latest computer runs (GFS, EURO, etc)? Hope it looks more encouraging than predictor. If it waits til 8:00 to start, it could mess up the whole thing.

Wow! I didn’t know that I was causing such a controversy!
