Better Than a Three Degree Guarantee

Forecasting from your gut and getting away from the general model guidance can be a lonely place. James Spann of www.alabamawx.com feels pretty confident that this week will be colder than the models, and his detractors, suggest…

If we have a high in the 60s on Tuesday, I will suck down a whole bottle of mayonnaise, something I have disliked since I was a young child. We will tape it and put it on the blog. For all the people who have sent in “hate mail” siding with “The Weather Channel’, if we are right and it turns sharply colder on Tuesday, you have to promise to quit sending nasty e-mail messages for a whole year. How is that for a deal?

Oh how I hope that James is correct for his (along with his waisteline’s) sake.

I love mayo but can’t imagine an entire jar at once. Ew.

What’s up with hate weather email/blogging anyway? What’s the point? I don’t get it.

  2. Gabe says:

Almost everywhere I have been looking says to expect a wintry mix and snow late monday into tuesday morning….not really heavy but still it will be falling according to most sources

  3. aaron says:

i agree gabe the nws says 100% chance of rain tomorrow with a 50% chance of rain before midnight then a chance of snow showers i would think even some accumulation would be possible with this one. this could be a dangerous situation for us and if all this rain is still falling when the temp starts falling toward freezing it could mean BLACK ICE on roads. justin give us the latest.

  4. Carl says:

    Justin,

How funny is that…I just read James’ blog for the first time 5 minutes ago. He has a reputation. He is either loved or hated…no middle ground with him. He’s for the cold; Therefore, I am on his side. :)

  5. Glenn says:

Ok I want snow as much as the next person, but is there really a chance for it to stick? It’s 70 degrees out there right now…

  6. It is 70 degrees here in Centerville… I dont see how any accumulations could occur. Maybe if it fell at a very fast clip it may.. I dunno about it, ive said that so many times it seems like.

  7. Most of the snow has been taken out of the forcast for the millionth time so I say forget about everything. rain snow ice whatever WE ARENT GONNA GET A THING. Im flustrated!

  8. Balena says:

    I agree with Ryan.Face reality.It hasn’t even rained yet.

  9. IS the cold front edging through west tennessee right now? Because the darker greens on the temp map looks like the cold front.

  10. I dont mean to be flooding the site with me but, this is for everyone; they have new ice storm warnings out for Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas, it seems to me like it odd for them to be getting ice and whatever else and around here were supposed to get rain… I am just dumbfounded I guess.

  11. Kailyn Leto says:

I think we might see something out of this…but the reason they’re getting it is because (VERY!) shallow cold air and deep moisture will give them conditions for ice that we won’t have.

  12. Matt5797 says:

I’m tempted to say that we will see a little snow/sleet on the back side of this. while the moisture at 05Z Tuesday will be relatively shallow, temps will be settled in near freezing leaving a chance for some light snow or sleet, depending on how the atmosphere’s temperature structure is. believe that the dominate of the two would be snow as the cold air should be pretty consistent. even though the air temp has been near 70, this won’t completely ruin our chance of minor accumulation accumulations but it won’t help it. by the way the reason Louisiana and all those other lucky southern areas are getting ice and or snow is b/c the cold front has stalled right as it is passing or has passed them. if our region could pass a cold front any faster we would be looking at either some thick ice or a crud load of snow. TN has a bad curse or what not of getting southern winds and other conditions that really spikes our temps before a significant system.

Nailed that one on ther head, Matt

  14. jennifer says:

Does this not make for one of the most interesting weather systems to watch this season for us weather geeks? I don’t have a clue what it might or might not do, but its fun to speculate… Maybe its just wishful thinking on my part, but something about the whole system just seems unpredictable - maybe that leaves us some hope for some snow… any thoughts?

  15. well the cold front has pushed through here without a doubt, it was 70 about humm hour and a half ago and now its 59. :) Hummmmm…

  16. Cameron K. says:

Ryan, can you pull up a map that shows where the cold front is currently? I looked at the surface maps, but if it is already in Hickman then the current map is out of date.

  17. jennifer says:

also, the radar loop is showing rain in your county. is that the case?

  18. Alex says:

Thats not the cold front. It is still in the same place it has been. That drop was caused by rain.

  19. Well, that may be the case but it is still dropping a little bit; not as steady as it was but it is still going. I thought a trough was going to come from OK and push this front on???

  20. Anonymous says:

lets talk about the snow we are not going to get.We better hurry and get to the grocery store before the bread and milk is gone.

  21. JW says:

I hate to offend anyone, but you all are complaining about this James guy and his weather predictions…..YET….all we heard all week long from our own weather personnel was how it was going to rain all weekend, and we were going to get 3 or more inches of rain…the weekend is a wash etc……..what happened to that!?

So you all are going to believe what they say NOW…when they don’t seem to be able to predict simple rain with any degree of accuracy? It doesn’t appear they know what is going to happen…so your just better off to try to figure it out for yourself…..I live in Portland….we have seen nothing more than mere sprinkles all weekend long, barely enough to get the roads wet……some washout!!!!

  22. Becki says:

Hey JW you cant be right 100% of the time,Give them a break. How about instead of pointing out the one time that they are wrong, pointing out all the times they are right?

  23. Justin says:

The weekend forecast was off the mark. The rain held off to the west (where there was plenty of it) but we were just east and missed out. To our credit, the forecasts Sat and Sun mornings did reflect the heavy rain staying west of here until Monday.
