Still Looks Sloppy

LATEST WRF MODEL RUN COATS US WITH AT LEAST 1″ OF SNOW BY DAWN THURSDAY:
thursdayamtotals.jpg

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for portions of the Highland Rim and Cumberland Plateau. A http://www.srh.noaa.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=ohx&wwa=winter%20weather%20advisory for the rest of us. Check out the homepage of the NWS to see the map.

The big question continues to be how quickly will warmer temps push up from the south. It looks like we could see mixed precip south of I-40 by, if not a little before, sunrise. If temps rise as expected any snow or ice should change to a light rain south of I-40 by mid to late morning. Your snow will melt.

North of 40 will probably see the precip end before it changes over to rain so you may get to keep your 1-2″ of snow.

Another wave of moisture will trigger a mixed or snow north, rain south Thursday night.

I just looked at the US Current Weather Map on weather.com and the Low looks to be pretty far South, like out in the Gulf of Mexico. Is that farther South then what was expected because if not how far South does a Low have to be for us to get a good snow? I know I saw some reports that if it went South of B’ham, AL then we would get more snow then anything else. Well is the Gulf of Mexico far enough South?

  2. David F. in Murfreesboro says:

The nashvillewx Channel shows just a little patch of snow off to the West and the composite radar shows a lot of snow from Nashville West, is the stormtracker radar picking up on snow reaching the ground and the composite picking up on snow in the upper atmosphere?

  3. Anonymous says:

That sounded a little not like what I wanted to hear Miss Lisa.
I neeeeeeeed the snow!!!! I need to stay home tommorow!!!

  4. Matthew says:

If we can divert all I-40 traffic to the 840 loop in an effort to decieve the system into thinking that I-40 is actually much further south, do you think that would help our chances??

  5. vance says:

i just checked the nws under the surface observation link and it said there’s light snow in memphis. i always heard that if it snows in memphis, it will snow in nashville.

  6. Danny says:

Good evening snow lovers! :) I know that most of the snow on the radar is virga, and the air has to “moisten up” a while before snow starts falling, but when does anyone think this will happen?

Does anyone to the west already have snow falling? Let’s all give reports so we know what’s going on around here. I know it is now snowing at the ground in Waverly, which isn’t that far from Nashville. And west TN has had snow for some time now.

Let’s post so we know what to expect as this evening goes on! Good idea? I think so…

  7. Tracy says:

Ahhhhh! The dreaded, “The big question continues to be how quickly will warmer temps push up from the south.”

And unforunately this question will be answered when it happens.

I remember when the warm air came up when it was predicted that it wouldn’t and I remember when the warm air stayed south when it was predicted that it would come up.

Oh! To have the easy job of forecasting the weather!

  8. Gabe says:

    Lisa,

The LOW is so far south…..why are temps gonna warm up? Normally if a LOW is around montgomery we get nothing but snow…..whats wrong with this one. It looks to be well south of montgomery

  9. Jennifer says:

Danny, Sounds like a good idea to me, I am in Joelton….will let you all know when I see snow…

  10. Gabe says:

I am seeing VERY DARK green on the NWS radar between jackson and parsons….its movnig east right into my area really soon. Right now its probably just a light snow though

  11. Update says:

Snow reported in Waverly area. Dusting in Camden being reported.
Memphis and Jackson light snow and accumulations observed South of I-40

  12. Anonymous says:

Yes that brighter area of white is quick burst of snow!

    It is starting.

  13. Lisa P. says:

Can’t answer them all right now.. but, yes, we are getting a light snow west of Nashville. This is a small burst before the more significant snow later tonight. This first patch looks to be heading east/southeast which means a quick shot of snow for counties mainly south of I-40 (moving west to east) between now and 7:30pm. It will coat some surfaces but probably won’t last long enough to add up to much.

  14. kerri says:

We allready have a dusting in Dover(stewart county):)

  15. Jennifer says:

Well I said I would let you all know all when it started to snow in Joelton, the flakes have started to fall. Let it Snow!!!

  16. Danny says:

Alright, cool… Let’s keep posting. I typed in different cities to see where it was being reported and now it seems close to the Dickson area (in regards to the I-40 corridor)… That seemed to happen quicker than they said it would. It’s not even 6 o’clock yet! I live in Williamson county so I’m waiting…

Also, to anyone who knows about/looks at the NOAA NWS radar composite and base radars, is the base radar an accurate reading of where snow is actually reaching the ground? It seems that way to me. I’m just curious. If you don’t know what I mean, go to the right bar of this main page and click on NWS radar. Then click on the left on base, and compare it with the composite.

  17. GARY@WBBJTV.COM says:

Snow is being observed South of I-40 and in patches North of I-40.

I have relatives in Trenton, TN (Just N. of Jackson). Been snowing since 4:00opm and already 1.5″ on the ground!

  23. Clay says:

Yeah, I have relatives in Jonesboro,AR. They’ve got over one and a half inches of Snow.

  24. Brad Foster says:

    Hey hey!

Well it looks you got a pretty interesting and difficult forecast on your hands hear in middle tennessee tonight. Wish i could be there and miss out on some school there!:)

Light snow fell in NE KAnsas today and coated the ground with an inch but nothing major. I find it funny that we go to school when it snows here even if there is 8inches like last week but, after school activities are canceled!

We have had snow on the ground here (some days more than others) I think this latest snow will stay for at least the next 5-6days as we wont get above freezing for a week. Highs here in Friday will struggle to reach 15.

An old cookevillan saying good luck and do the snow dance!

Go buy your bread and milk folks!!!!
we are moving I-40 up further..

  30. David F. in Murfreesboro says:

Is nobody else noticing how far South the Low is? It’s way out in the Gulf of Mexico. That thing is basically going to have to go mostly North with a little turn to the South to get towards B’ham, AL. For some reason I just think we’ll end up getting more then is predicted. Maybe it’s just hope and wishful thinking though.

  31. Anonymous says:

i think the low might be over cuba right now..

  32. Danny says:

Any new snow hitting the ground around Middle TN? Was it just this heavy(er) burst that seemed to bust through the dry air. Williamson county is waiting!

  33. Bobby says:

Love to see the kind of snow we had when I was growing up. like at least I dont know, 8 to 12 inches!! As long as it would stay off the roads!!! Hate driving in it with my little S-10 pick-up! It dont like snow!! Maybe the roads will stay clear but you know, I still have 6 or 7 vacation days I can use!! so let it snow!

  34. GARY@WBBJTV JACKSON says:

There is not 1 and a half inches on the ground in Jackson. That was a false report.
The most I have had reported to me here at WBBJ is 1/4 inch. And that was a n isolated event.

Im working with WKRN to send pics in like I did for the 6PM news cast.

Ok guys ill keep you posted.

I rember i was in 7th grade January 16, 2003 and everyone was asking me if we would get out of school. ( iwas the school weatherman…i am going to go to OU and become a meteorologist) Anyways i said maybe right after lunch they will close schools. In 2nd period i was baned from saying the word snow and almost got a demerit for it. Then the P/A system said at 9:45am or so, “Due to snow we will be releasing school at 10am! I looked at mrs. Dunn and said snow day. we all started to scream. That was a good snow for everyone! We had about 5-6inches in cookeville. We mad a 12 foot snowman. Ahhh it was great.

  39. greengrass says:

After reading so many posts with great information, does anyone consider that we are talking about an inch or 2 of snow? an inch!! Would an inch or two shut down this city? I hope not but I am not sure! This situation would not affect a city like Pittsburgh,PA. The geography is similar to Nashville. But I get a feeling that it could affect many as so many folks just don’t get it!! The IT is slow down and be proactive behind the wheel. Drive in 2nd gear if necassary and plan your trip and be aware of people around you. I wish everyone a safe drive.
