Monday Afternoon Update

Light to moderate rain continues to dampen most of Middle Tennessee this afternoon.

Dry weather has already pushed into the northwest corner of the mid-state (Clarksville, Paris, Dover, Erin, etc.) but so has the cold air - temperatures there are falling through the lower 40s. At 2pm it was already down in the upper 30s in Paris. For the rest of Middle Tennessee, it’s a wet afternoon. This morning’s cold front is now past Knoxville and Birmingham, but there’s plenty of moisture on the backside of the front. Light to moderate rain should push out of Nashville during the early evening, but a few more patches of rain are possible until 9pm or so. For areas east and south of Nashville (Cookeville, Woodbury, Shelbyville, Lawrenceburg, Pulaski, Lewisburg, Manchester, Sparta, McMinnville, etc.) count on the steady rain through the evening. The precipitation should clear the southeast corner of Middle Tennessee after midnight.

Northwest winds will pick up after the rain, allowing cold air to quickly move into the area. Not quick enough to change the rain to snowflakes or other wintry weather in Nashville, in my opinion. I suppose that a little sleet or some wet snowflakes are possible on the back edge of the moisture up on the Cumberland Plateau late tonight, but the ground will have a tough time forgetting it was in the middle 60s this weekend (lower 70s in Nashville). Even though we’re dealing with the same system that hit the Central and Southern Plains, we don’t expect any freezing rain or accumulating snow. I even think that the winds behind the moisture will help dry the roads later this evening and tonight, before temperatures fall down around freezing. We’ll be checking SnowTracker tomorrow morning for any delays or closings up on the Plateau, just in case…

Aghh. When we have moisture, we have no cold air. When we have cold air, we have no low pressure.

  2. shaq725 says:

  3. Anonymous says:

  6. nicole says:

will Tennessee ever see any snow again?

  7. Matt5797 says:

of course we will. just not this particular decade ;)

  8. Clay says:

I’m sure just about every meteorologist in this area will tell you that Tennessee snows come in cycles. We are in the slow part of it.

There is a second wave of moisture developing west of here. This is Nashville’s
one and final shot at something frozen. The cold air needs to speed up so, we can get a change-over.

  9. shaq725 says:

currently 44.8 at my house in columbia

  10. Ryan in Hickman County says:

  13. aaron in davidson county says:

ok i believe i’m seeing some light snow falling in lakewood i’ll keep in touch.

  14. Ryan in Hickman County says:

Yeah these roads are still pleanty wet for black ice in the a.m. Light snow and flurries are still going on from time to time.

  15. Anonymous says:

get over it people.no black ice or snow, what ever

  16. aaron in davidson county says:

same here some drizzle and flurries. i think metro has a good bet to close tomorrow i mean these roads are downright wet wind or not as wet as some roads are it looks like they really wont stand a chance of drying everybody keep me informed on weather conditions at your place.

  17. aaron in davidson county says:

well in downtown nashville the reading is now 43 degrees i just read a forecast from newschannel 5’s ron howes which stated that some patchy ice will be in areas with wet roads in the morning which could lead to dangerous conditions for buses and all vehicle transport and still drizzle and flurries a temp update where i live is 43.5 degrees and a few other locations i have are clarksville with 38.3 degrees and dover with 37.1 degrees it’s coming!

  20. aaron in davidson county says:

well anonymous i just asked that question to lisa about here in my area lisa could you also tell us if you’ve heard anything from southern middle tennessee?

  21. aaron in davidson county says:

well the national weather service still thinks a chance of flurries will be possible even in middle tennessee here’s an update….

  22. aaron in davidson county says:

hey ryan do you have a weather update for me?

  23. WeatherDudeB says:

I highly doubt schools will be closed. Highly doubt.

  24. aaron in davidson county says:

ok now in downtown nashville the temp is 41 degrees. and in my lakewood area its 40.1 degrees. so its about to fall already into the upper 30’s and if you look on the radar icon on the main page you can see some flurries and snow showers in missouri and illinois that looks like it may be headed this way so we’ll watch this carefully.

  25. Ryan in Hickman County says:

Wind is howling and it is sorta drying up the water on the road and on deck etc. Still flurries from time to time. But I think kiddos need to get homework done and go to bed.

  26. aaron in davidson county metro nashville says:

road update: roads still very wet here in my area with reports of some bridges on i-65 in nashville still very wet.

  27. WeatherDudeB says:

There may be patchy ice in the morning but not enough to cancel schools or prolly even delay them. Exception would be the Plateau as it seems we go to sleep with cloudy skies and wake up to an inch of snow and schools closed on the plateau, other than that everyone else can expect to go to school tomorrow.

  28. aaron in davidson county metro nashville says:

can any meteorologist in the news 2 weather team tell me about metro schools i mean usually every time we get black ice schools close here please tell me if you’ve heard anything.

  29. Ryan in Hickman County says:

Just wondering what is developing down over Arkansas and Louisana and Mississippi??

  30. Kailyn Leto says:

    I…am baffled.

    Something fishy is going on.

  31. Matt5797 says:

are you talking about the moisture coming from the NW of us kaitlyn?

  32. Kailyn Leto says:

I know it’s higher-level moisture…but the models aren’t even picking up on it.

My gut tells me something’s awry with this…

  33. Ryan in Hickman County says:

Ive been watching it for a lil while now, Its expanding toward this way.. How long have you been watching it Kailyn?? Its just so weird that it just came up *pop* like that! The snow in MO is expanding slightly too.. I smell something FiShY!! I hope its a good fishy though.

  34. Matt5797 says:

yea i was wondering what was going on too. it reminds me of an alberta clipper. i suppose that is the flurries or sn- they were talking about

  35. Kailyn Leto says:

I just checked the forecast soundings…it could actually be sleet and snow…stay tuned.

  36. Ryan in Hickman County says:

LOL Yeahh dont spell it out! The s word.. But humm im still curious, its 33 degrees here in the Hickman area, and that thing looks like its coming our way… SN–?? Nahh.. Im gonna stay up longer than originally planned. I have college starting tommorrow but I may keep my eye on this a lil while.

  37. Keith says:

    It’s still 45 in Columbia.

    Strange.

  38. Kailyn Leto says:

    I call it:

    either
    VIRGA
    or
    IP-/FZDZ-/SHSN-

  39. Matt5797 says:

btw ryan s- is the way nws indicates light snow. i just threw in an n :) sorry to be misleading

  40. Matt5797 says:

at these temps id say radar echoes are more reliable than warm days.

  41. Ryan in Hickman County says:

VIRGA.. Hummm, with that deep of moisture? Whats the ground reading saying in those areas have you seen?

  42. Kailyn Leto says:

I’d have to agree; however, the atmosphere is really screwed up right now…there is a teensy-weensy bit of overrunning as per WRF forecast soundings…it smells fishy…like Farmer’s Market used to smell…

  43. Cameron K. says:

I’m looking at the southern Mississippi valley sector radar - is that what you guys are looking at? If it gets here that means possible sleet or snow if temps fall fast enough.

    http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/southmissvly_loop.pvhp

  44. Matt5797 says:

we are looking at the moisture to our northeast but the moisture u are talking about could be of concern to southern middle TN

  45. Matt5797 says:

    NW sorry

  46. Ryan in Hickman County says:

Thats what we have been watching yeah.. This is the new Tupelo and surrounding area short term forcast.. ITS NOT VIRGA..

  48. toddrix says:

I have access to an accuweather pay site called radar plus that has a 4 hour predictive radar forecast. It is showing a significant precip event in the southern half of middle tn at about 1am

  49. Matt5797 says:

really, that is really interesting. does this radar indicate precip type?
