Monday Afternoon Update

Light to moderate rain continues to dampen most of Middle Tennessee this afternoon.

Dry weather has already pushed into the northwest corner of the mid-state (Clarksville, Paris, Dover, Erin, etc.) but so has the cold air - temperatures there are falling through the lower 40s. At 2pm it was already down in the upper 30s in Paris. For the rest of Middle Tennessee, it’s a wet afternoon. This morning’s cold front is now past Knoxville and Birmingham, but there’s plenty of moisture on the backside of the front. Light to moderate rain should push out of Nashville during the early evening, but a few more patches of rain are possible until 9pm or so. For areas east and south of Nashville (Cookeville, Woodbury, Shelbyville, Lawrenceburg, Pulaski, Lewisburg, Manchester, Sparta, McMinnville, etc.) count on the steady rain through the evening. The precipitation should clear the southeast corner of Middle Tennessee after midnight.

Northwest winds will pick up after the rain, allowing cold air to quickly move into the area. Not quick enough to change the rain to snowflakes or other wintry weather in Nashville, in my opinion. I suppose that a little sleet or some wet snowflakes are possible on the back edge of the moisture up on the Cumberland Plateau late tonight, but the ground will have a tough time forgetting it was in the middle 60s this weekend (lower 70s in Nashville). Even though we’re dealing with the same system that hit the Central and Southern Plains, we don’t expect any freezing rain or accumulating snow. I even think that the winds behind the moisture will help dry the roads later this evening and tonight, before temperatures fall down around freezing. We’ll be checking SnowTracker tomorrow morning for any delays or closings up on the Plateau, just in case…

    Meh.

Should we really trust accuweather, though? ;)

I’d like to see us get a persistent snow shower event like st louis is getting right now. It seems plausible with that energy moving from the nw and moisture streaming from the sw. This is nashville, however, and it doesn’t snow here.

LOL, thats what I say Keith.. BUT THIS IS VERY INTERESTING!!

  5. Clay says:

Folks, 3-6 inches of snow that never fell was very interesting too. Sorry to bring that back up. Don’t get too depressed.

The radar plus site at accuweather doesn’t show precip type. It actually seems fairly primitive…it just moves the echos at whatever the initial movement was without taking into account the weather situation upsteam. It even maintains the same shape of the echoes 4 hours into the future. People pay for this? Accuweather is in the weathertainment business, so anything they say should be taken with a grain of salt.

  9. Kailyn Leto says:

I agree…but it is useful in certain ways. I know this is out there, but Kate Bilo is hot lol…so at least there’s one reason.

  10. Ryan in Hickman County says:

Toddrix I agree with you 100%! Clay, you would never believe me but when I ran and got my digi camera, it had already stopped.. It comes in waves, very short waves… lol But ive got it now in case it comes again.

Looking at nearby radars is certainly giving me a little hope. St louis is showing snow showers, Springfield Il is showing snow, Evansville shows some flurries, Louisville shows snow showers developing, and Indianapolis is getting an accumulating band of snow as we speak. Seems like Nashville should be next..I’ll cross my fingers. One other thing of note is the Snow in Indy which is Lake Enhanced. The fetch off of Lake Michigan is a rare North to South. The significance of this is that Nashville is directly south of the lake. Although we’re hundreds of miles away, its has at least add a little more moisture to the atmosphere.

It’s interesting to note…aviationweather.noaa.gov has a map, and there is a threat for icing from 1000′ to FL300 (30k feet, or ~9500m) over us.
