Happy New Year

Low Clouds will hang around northern counties of middle Tennessee on New Year’s Day leaving high temps in the much cooler 40’s.

Southern counties should have more sun and warm to near 50 degrees.

Of course, either is much closer to normal than the very warm temps of December 2006!

Early Afternoon Wx Look

I don’t know what’s quicker: the clouds that just cleared Nashville or this guy?

Before 2:00 pm, the off and on showers from earlier today had pushed east of the I-65 corridor, away from western and central sections of the mid-state. The cloud cover is quick to follow suit.

The winds are gusty at times, around 20 mph. Temperatures will rebound a little thanks to the sun; expect low to mid 60s this afternoon. It will take a couple more hours for the rain and clouds to clear areas toward the Cumberland Plateau.

Sunday Forecast

Latest StormTracker radar image.

The steady rain is on the way out this morning. During the 6 o’clock hour the rain is lifting northeast of the I-24 corridor, away from Clarksville, Nashville, Murfreesboro and points in between. A few additional showers are possible until the clouds clear around early afternoon in Music City. Clouds will clear west of I-65 by midday but linger in the eastern half of the mid-state (spotty showers possible through the afternoon along the Cumberland Plateau). Expect breezy conditions…with occasional gusts around 20 mph. Temperatures are near 60 degrees this morning and we should see middle 60s later this afternoon as the sun returns.

New Year’s Eve should be dry. Temperatures near midnight will be in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. A breeze from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph will make it feel cooler than that.

Expect more clouds and a small sprinkle chance tomorrow to start 2007. I-40 and points north will contend with more cloud cover…but 40s are expected Monday afternoon across all of the mid-state. Aside from Monday, mild weather dominates the seven day forecast.

Saturday Night Wx Look

No torrential downpours, but more than enough rain to cause some headaches if you’re out and about…

Saturday Afternoon Wx Look

No big changes to the forecast. Light rain is moving into the southwest corner of Middle Tennessee; some of the radar returns on StormTracker are evaporating before reaching the ground (virga). Clouds will thicken and winds will pick up as the light rain arrives later this afternoon and evening.

Rain is in the forecast this evening, tonight and much of Sunday. I think there will be breaks in the rain from time to time, so not a 100% washout. A clap of thunder or two is possible, but no strong weather is expected with this system. Looking at the latest guidance, especially the GFS, I think rain totals will be closer to 1″ than the 1″ to 2″ that I mentioned this morning.

Rain on the Way

Another look at today’s forecast.

Wet weather is in the forecast later this afternoon, tonight and much of Sunday.

The rain should push in from the west around 5pm here in Nashville. Areas west of I-65, especially toward the Tennessee River, should see some rain by mid-afternoon. Areas east of I-65 will contend with the rain by evening.

Scattered showers are in the forecast late this afternoon, this evening and tonight. The rain late tonight and Sunday morning will be heavy at times. Some thunder and a steady 15 to 20 mph wind will accompany the heavy rain. Hopefully the rain wraps up by game time at LP Field tomorrow…but for now I’d plan on some showers, at least to start. Areas east of I-65 will deal with showers through the afternoon before the wet weather completely departs.

The good news is that New Year’s Eve looks dry. 2007 will be a bit cooler, with upper 40s on Monday. A few chilly showers are possible on Monday but it looks quiet Tuesday and Wednesday. Another rain chance arrives next Thursday and Friday.

Saturday Forecast

Lots of weather to talk about as we put 2006 in the books and look ahead to 2007.

Morning temperatures are mainly in the 40s. We’ll be in the lower 60s this afternoon, despite thickening clouds through the day. A southeast breeze will pick up this afternoon, with gusts past 20 mph expected tonight and tomorrow.

2006.12.30.high.temperatures.jpg

Rain is the main forecast focus for the next 36 hours. Heavy rain is currently falling in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi; that wet weather will push across Middle Tennessee from mid-to-late afternoon. Some severe weather is expected down along the Gulf Coast, but we only expect to hear some thunder tonight and tomorrow. The rain looks pretty heavy Sunday morning; 1″ to 2″ seems possible in some spots before the rain departs tomorrow afternoon. More on the timing of the rain and the New Year’s Eve forecast in a bit…

Warm End to the Old Year

We may have missed the record high but we were still 20 degrees above normal on Friday afternoon!

And, we can expect more warm weather on Saturday:
hisat.jpg

Rain chances begin west of Nashville by mid-afternoon Saturday with a few showers possible in town by early evening. The heaviest rains will come through with the front overnight Saturday into Sunday.

A Warm December

So far December has averaged almost 5 degrees above normal (average mean), only 7 days this month have we experience below normal temperatures. No surprise then we end the month with temperatures a good 20 degrees above the “average” high of 46. We’ll still be in the 60’s on Sunday dispite the fact we’ll have some good rains around. We expect a very brisk southwest wind during the morning hours and just might hit our daytime high then.

Warm End

Rain Saturday Night and Sunday, Mild

We’ll close out a warm December with more warm weather: in the 60’s over the last weekend of 2006. Today more in cloud cover but still very nice with a forecasted high around 62 for the Nashville area. Weather for the Music City Bowl about as good as it gets for late December, a little bit of a southeast wind and in the upper 50’s at kick off. Tonight only down in the mid 40’s (the typical HIGH this time of year). Tomorrow the clouds thicken and we start seeing some rain around middle Tennessee; by Saturday night it’ll be a downpour. Storms, wind and rain in the forecast during the night, overnight and the first half of the day on Sunday. Hopefully the rain should be moving out just as we count down to the New Year. Cooler as we start 2007, in the low 50’s for a high on Monday. Below are the mild highs forecasted for today:
