Saturday Forecast

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Early morning temperatures are in the 70s, but won’t stay there for long. Temperatures will approach 90 by midday and reach the lower and middle 90s this afternoon. Lots of humidity to boot. A large cluster of thunderstorms is over Missouri to start the day and that will mean sunshine mixed with high cirrus clouds this morning, especially northwest of Nashville. Otherwise we’ll be partly cloudy and hazy. The humidity is back and will linger into early next week until a front moves across the area. I’ll have more on that front in an entry a little later this morning. There may be an isolated afternoon t’shower today or tomorrow but I think the better rain chance holds off until early next week.

Getting Warmer

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Wxhdlines.jpg

Temps returned to the low 90s yesterday and we expect mid 90’s this afternoon. After a brief break in the humidity with dew points only in the 50s to low 60s the last several days, we’re watching the dew point climb back to upper 60’s today, with low 70’s anticipated over the weekend. You can feel the subtle difference if you’ve been outside.
We don’t expect much in the way of scattered afternoon storms for the next two days with none expected today, and about a 20% chance on Saturday. By Sunday, we can push those chances to 30-40% for scattered summer like afternoon activity. But our best chances will come Monday and especially Tuesday of next week when another cold front approaches.

Friday Forecast

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Morning temperatures are mainly in the 60s, but this afternoon we’ll crank up the heat and humidity. Lower to middle 90s will feel more like middle to upper 90s because of the mugginess. Expect plenty of sun today, with some fair weather cumulus this afternoon. Small afternoon thundershower chances (around 20%) are back in the forecast this weekend. A slow-moving front will bring better thundershower chances on Monday and Tuesday. As long as the front clears Tennessee by Wednesday we’ll have nice weather for the middle and end of next week. Every once in a while fronts can stall and get hung up over the area, so we’ll watch for that possibility in the computer models over the next few days. By the way, the tropical activity I mentioned yesterday is now Tropical Depression #5. We’ll watch this one closely, as the forecast track takes it to the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week.

Ernesto on the Way?

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

The Hurricane Hunters will fly to the eastern Caribbean this afternoon to investigate a tropical wave approaching the Windward Islands (visible loop). Depending on what they find, this cluster of thunderstorms could become Tropical Depression #5 or Tropical Storm Ernesto later today or tonight. The model consensus takes this storm into the Caribbean and hints that it could head into the Gulf of Mexico next week. While Tropical Storm Debby spirals over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to little fanfare, we’ll watch this tropical wave closely and keep you posted.

Promos Gone Wild

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

The Fox station in Charlotte has gone out on a limb with their latest weather promo. It’s over the top, literally and figuratively. Links from Ryan Vaughan, Mike the GM, and Brittney at Nashville is Talking.

Mike Tarrolly is our promotions director at News 2. If you’ve seen any of his Titans preseason spots, you already know he’s got quite the creative streak. Further proof is the Dinner with the StormTrackers Super Bowl spot that never aired and the Big Joe Titans preseason spots from last year (or the year before; it’s my favorite). My favorite weather promo of the past few years comes from WCBS in New York. Just remember that their primary competition is the blow-dryed Sam Champion (of Regis fill-in fame and soon to be the national weather guy on Good Morning America).

Morning Chill

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

This morning’s low in Nashville was 64 degrees. That’s the first time Nashville has dipped into the 60s in the month of August, and the coolest we’ve been since July 8th (47 days ago). The urban heat island effect was in full swing last night: Nashville fell to the middle 60s but Clarksville bottomed out in the middle 50s!

Thursday Forecast

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

Mostly sunny skies today as the dry weather continues across Tennessee. Lots of sunlight yesterday and today has produced high ozone counts; an Air Quality advisory is in effect today for middle Tennessee for those most sensitive to bad air (the elderly, those with lung problems). Low dewpoints again today, not as low as yesterday (the lowest readings we’ve had since June) but still not too bad for mid-August. Tomorrow the humidity returns as well as the warmer weather but tonight will be another great evening across Tennessee. This morning by the way registered some upper 50’s for lows across the area; the first “50’s we’ve seen since June. Below are the forecasted highs for our area.

Highs Today

Wednesday Weather

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

The weather today couldn’t be better, in this weather guy’s humble opinion. Dewpoints are in the 50s and lower 60s across the area. Afternoon temperatures will be typical for late August, in the upper 80s to near 90. No shortage of sunshine for the next couple of days. On the visible satellite loop you’ll see clouds across the Deep South; those are what’s left of the surface front that moved across Tennessee earlier this week. Temperatures late tonight and early Thursday morning will be cool and comfortable. Assuming the forecast pans out for Nashville, we’ll dip into the 60s for the first time all month (our last morning low in the 60s was back on July 30th). Enjoy the day!

Tropical Storm Debby

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

Tropical Storm Debby is in the eastern Atlantic and doesn’t pose a direct threat to the United States. Maximum sustained winds are around 50 mph and she’s moving west-northwest at 17 mph. Here’s the latest visible satellite image and here’s Debby’s predicted five day path. You probably won’t hear too much about Debby on the blog over the next few days, unless there are changes in her forecast track or intensity.

Low Humidity At Least

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

We’ll enjoy dewpoints in the low 60’s/upper 50’s this afternoon and despite temperatures slightly above normal (normal:87, today:90) the lower humidity will make outdoor activities more enjoyable. Next couple of days good weather for the Wilson Co. Fair or the start of Celebration down in Shelbyville (I’ll be down there live this Friday morning for the country’s largest horse show). Expect dry weather to last all the way till Saturday or Sunday, by Friday however we’ll have the return of summer humidity as the winds turn to the south. Here are the forecasted highs for the day:

Highs Today

Tropical Storm Debby has 45mph winds and still for out in the eastern Atlantic; it will likely become a hurricane by Saturday, might threaten Bermuda by early next week.

If you live near a working farm you might have noticed this years’ corn crop is starting to harvest; most of the big corn producing counties in Tennessee are out west in the delta soil, Robertson county is the biggest producer in middle Tennessee. Corn is not a big crop in the Volunteer state; about 650,000 acres planted this year, Iowa plants about 12 MILLION acres.
