Saturday Forecast

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

We’re waking up to thundershowers in parts of Middle Tennessee. The forecast today really depends on where you live: areas north of I-40 should stay mainly dry while the southern half of the mid-state has a better t’shower chance from morning through the afternoon. Temperatures today will be in the upper 80s but hot weather dominates the seven day forecast. I’ll have updates on the blog through the morning hours…

Highs for Saturday July 29th

Early Morning Radar Update

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

At 5:18 am a cluster of thunderstorms was along the I-40 corridor between the Tennessee River and the Nashville area. Heavy rain and lightning with a few pockets of small hail (non-severe hail) can be expected. I’ll have the latest on News 2 Weekend at 6:00 am and 8:00 am this morning.

Record Highs and Late July

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Record heat and late July aren’t strangers. On this date in 1930 all-time record highs were set in Hohenwald (108), Lynville (109), Coldwater and Lewisburg (both 110). On this date in 1952 all-time records were hit in Smithville (110) and Waynesboro (108). In Nashville a record high was set for the fourth day in a row as the mercury climbed to 105 during the afternoon. No thanks! Information courtesy of the Nashville NWS.

An Update On The Weekend Forecast…I’m Going To Play A Hunch

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Two out of three of the primary models we use for 1-2 day forecasts keep rain in the forecast for all day Saturday.
However, all three of them show the tropical upper air disturbance moving farther southeastward as the day wears on. That seems out of phase. My hunch is that most of the rain for Nashville will be this afternoon, tonight and early Saturday morning (with the upper air disturbance). After the early morning hours, most of the shower activity will push south and east of Nashville. We will probably see sunshine with only isolated storm chances the rest of the day. Southern and eastern counties may still see higher rain chances persist into the afternoon. So, there’s my hunch!

On Sunday, skies will be partly cloudy with a few “hit or miss” t’storms and warmer temperatures in the low 90s.

As for this afternoon, rush hour in Nashville will be wet. To repeat what I said before:
Since it is Friday, the commute home might become frustrating. But just keep thinking that it’s Friday, relax, and be safe on the way home!

Showers in Nashville

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Although the steady rain is still about an hour away from Nashville, some “pop up” showers and t’storms have already appeared in Nashville, Murfreesboro, Brentwood, and near Center Hill Dam. In addition, a line of storms has developed in southeast Middle Tennessee from Winchester to McMinnville to Sparta. You can follow the activity on the radars above.

Bring it on!

Rain Pushing In For Friday Afternoon Through Part of Saturday

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Davis here, back from a refreshing two days off. The tropical system that we started following last Sunday is here just about on time (yesterday excluded). The rain has already crossed the Tennessee River as of 11:30am, and is from Clarksville to Erin to Wavery to Decaturville to Savannah. I anticipate that Nashville will see the rain by 2pm. Rush Hour looks wet, and since it’s Friday, the commute home might be frustrating. But hey, think about the fact that it’s Friday, relax, and be safe on the way home! As Justin mentioned, opening day for Titans training camp in Clarksville looks wet.

Here’s the latest on the weekend:

The tropical system’s rains should be around for at least the first half of Saturday, if not most of the day. However, by Saturday evening, the rain should be tapering off. Highs on Saturday will stay in the mid to upper 80’s.

On Sunday, we’ll still have a chance for some scattered t’storms, but much lower chances than Saturday. Highs on Sunday with less cloud cover should be back near 90.

I’m not a big fan of “percent chances for rain”, but to give the relative feel of things I’d say:

This afternoon: 70%
Tonight: 70%
Saturday: 60%
Saturday eve: 30%
Sunday: 30%.

10:24 am Radar Update

Friday, July 28th, 2006

At 10:24 am rain was crossing the Tennessee River and reaching western parts of Middle Tennessee. Clarksville will see rain before lunchtime (wet weather for the Titans’ first day of training camp at Austin Peay). Counties covered with rain at the moment: Stewart, Houston, Henry, Carroll, Camden and Benton. The rain should hold off until the afternoon in Nashville. Areas east of I-65 toward the Cumberland Plateau should stay dry through the early and mid-afternoon. Davis will be here through the day to keep us on top of things.

Friday Forecast

Friday, July 28th, 2006

It’s partly sunny and mainly dry this morning. It’s quite mild with wake-up temperatures on either side of 80 degrees. The thundershower chance is better today than the past couple of days, especially for the northwest half of Middle Tennessee from midday through the afternoon. Those who don’t see wet weather today will have another opportunity on Saturday. We don’t expect any strong storms, we’re just crossing our fingers for a much-needed soaking.

Dry and Dusty!

3.23″ below normal precip for the year.

We’re forecasting…. okay, we’re hoping for… a little more on the radar sweep next couple of days.
We won’t all get rain but some will. I hope I’m wrong and we get a good soaking the next two days!

Breezy Thursday Afternoon

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

It’s been a breezy afternoon with a mix of clouds and sun across the mid-state. At 2:00 pm Nashville had a sustained wind of 18 mph and a gust of 24 mph. Click here for the latest weather observations across Tennessee. A few spotty showers have dotted areas north of I-40 but most locations haven’t seen any wet weather just yet. That trend should change as tropical-influenced moisture in TX/LA/AR heads this way Friday into the weekend. Not a wall-to-wall weekend washout, but a good chance of a shower or t’shower both days. Lisa will have the official forecast this afternoon on News 2.
