Cool Start to a Sunny Day

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

With low humidity and lots of sunshine we’ll see these cool morning temperatures jump quickly to the 60’s… topping out around 70. Tonight high pressure moves overhead, the north winds die down and we drop down back into the mid 40’s (the record low by the way is in the mid-30s). Tomorrow a few clouds move in from the west later in the day but very nice again; mostly sunny and in the mid-70’s by afternoon.
Cool Tonight

Trying to get a handle on the weekend forecast. With the marathon on Saturday morning many are watching and wondering if it’ll be wet; right now it looks like the worst of the weather will arrive Saturday afternoon and evening.

Locust or Blackberry?

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

This was in line to be one of our warmest April’s ever and then came “Locust (or is that Blackberry??) Winter”

Bundle up if you have to be out late night… look at these lows:

But still not cold enough for frost!

So, the debate is on… Old Wive’s Tale has it that we have 4, maybe 5, so-called winters before we finally warm up to summerlike weather.
We did the Redbud Winter dip back around the 3rd week of March. This was a long cool snap and the Redbud trees had just started to bloom.
Then there was Dogwood Winter the 8th and 9th of April. The Redbuds were still in bloom but the Dogwood tree blooms had opened up by then.
The Locust trees were really in full bloom almost a week ago but they are still blooming (although fading) so I think we have to call this Locust Winter.
Here’s the rub: Blackberry bushes have just started blooming and in some areas in full bloom (all the warm weather) so is this really Blackberry Winter??
I mentioned the quandry on TV this afternoon and most of the old-timers who called in say Blackberry Winter shouldn’t come until May so this has to be Locust Winter. But there are a few who disagree.

What do you think??

Wednesday Afternoon Update

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

Underneath the clouds there are a few sprinkles and isolated showers south and southeast of Nashville. Temperatures will continue to hover in the middle 50s in most spots thanks to that north breeze around 10 mph. Clouds should erode late tonight and leave us with sunshine for Thursday. It will be chilly tomorrow morning with that north breeze and readings in the 40s to start the day. High pressure settling across the area will spell a calm afternoon with highs on either side of 70 degrees. Not too bad for late April!

Cloudy & Cool

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

People often say “if you don’t like the weather in Tennessee give it five minutes”. I always say it’s more like a couple of days, but this is one of those transition times. Yesterday’s humidity and upper 70s to near 80 degrees have yielded to clouds and readings in the 50s and lower 60s. These weather changes are harder and harder to come by as we get into early summer; reason enough for a weather geek to enjoy them. We’ll expect the clouds to stay pretty thick through the afternoon, but clearing tonight and a north breeze will drop temperatures into the middle 40s early tomorrow morning. That north breeze at 5 to 10 mph should discourage much fog from developing, but it’s a possibility late tonight toward daybreak as dewpoints and temperatures will both be down in the 40s (hence relative humidities approaching 90% to 100%). Here’s the latest visible satellilte image, and the latest infrared image for when the sun goes down (7:30 pm these days).

Rain Update

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

Rain confined to the southern counties rest of the day as overcast conditions will persist elsewhere till afternoon. Rain chances will continue along the southern tier (along the Alabama state line) counties through early afternoon with warmer temperatures (upper 60’s) while Nashville and the north will be in the upper 50’s.

Morning Rain, A Few Storms

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

Not the greatest of weather for our Wednesday; morning rain across the southern counties with a few storms. Tale of two forecasts across middle Tennessee today with rain down south and cooler but dry weather north of Nashville. Tonight we’ll clear out and cool down to the mid-40’s; the coldest morning we’ve had since the 10th! Tomorrow looks very nice; low humidity, good air quality, lots of sunshine… good Spring weather as we kick off a run of typical temperatures for this time of year (low 70’s instead of that 80+ degree weather we were getting last week).

STORM THREAT ENDS

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

SLEEP EASY!
The storm cells which prompted a couple of warnings west of Nashville Tuesday evening have weakened to nothing more than isolated showers. While we may have a rumble of thunder in southern middle Tennessee overnight no more severe weather is expected.

We will have a much cooler Wednesday:wed his.jpg

Storm Watch West

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes western Kentucky and west Tennessee this Tuesday evening.ww0250_radar.gif

There have been wind damage and hail reports with this system back in southern Missouri.

While we do expect some rain and, at least, a few thundershowers later tonight.. say after 10 o’clock there is a good chance these storms will weaken as the sun goes down.
We’ll keep you posted.

Early Afternoon Update

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

Just want to let you know that a few thundershowers have popped between Cannon, DeKalb and Putnam counties east of Nashville. Nothing severe yet…but the possibility exists for some brief heavy rain, lightning and perhaps even an area or two with small hail. Some sunshine in West Tennessee could instigate a few more thundershowers through the afternoon. We’ll continue to wait and watch the radar with patience, you can check the “NWS Radar Loop” up top for the latest.
