Getting Warm, Humidity Still Not As Oppressive As Last Week

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Sun. Highs.jpg

DP Sun.jpg
Today’s high was 93. Last Sunday it was 94, but felt a whole lot worse!
The reason: The dew point (measure of humidity on Fahrenheit scale) is in the 60’s rather than 70’s, like last weekend.

But what about summer t’storms? Though there were none in Nashville, there were scattered t’storms in south, southeast, and east Middle Tennessee both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. That’s where they are expected to break out again on Monday. However, by the mid to later part of the work week, the system causing those storms may back up to the west a little bit. That will allow more scattered t’storms across the rest of Middle Tennessee.

Warming Up This Afternoon

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Temperatures will hit the low 90s this afternoon with humidity levels on the rise for the next couple of days…

The forecast:

Plenty of sunshine will mean a warm afternoon. Humidity will be a bit more noticeable today but a breeze from the northeast will make it feel pretty nice, especially during the morning and evening hours. I can’t rule out an afternoon t’shower for areas south and east of Nashville, but that activity should be few and far between and closer to Chattanooga and Huntsville.

Predicted highs for Sunday July 31st

Back To 90’s This Weekend, But Not As Humid

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

Last weekend (and much of last week), our dew points were in the low to mid 70’s, while our temperatures reached the 90’s. The difference this weekend? The humidity! It’s amazing how much better it feels outside, despite the 90 degree temperatures.

Much like Saturday, a few scattered t’storms will break out on Sunday in southern and eastern parts of Middle Tennessee, while Nashville will remain dry and warm.

How Warm This Weekend?

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

We enjoyed the 80s on Thursday and Friday - will it last through the weekend?

The forecast:

We’ll make a run at 90 degrees this afternoon in parts of Middle Tennessee. But that’s not unusual for late July - the normal high today is 89 in Nashville and I think that’s close to where we’ll end up:

Predicted highs for Saturday July 30th

The cold front that ended our “heat wave” last Wednesday has turned stationary and is falling apart off to our south. Because of that, clouds and scattered t’showers will stay to the south today and tomorrow. An added bonus for us - because we’re north of the front we’ll continue to enjoy a breeze from the north and comfortable humidity levels (for late July, anyhow).

Here’s a check of the rest of the weekend forecast.

Nice Weekend Weather

Temperatures back to normal but decent humidity!wkenwx.jpg

Only the southeastern corner of middle Tennessee has much in the way of a rain chance this weekend.
Enjoy… but don’t forget the weekend.

A Look at Space Shuttle Discovery

Friday, July 29th, 2005

What looks like a sun spot in the box pulled out is actually the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Discovery in transit of the sun. Cool huh?

You can get more detail on the shuttle’s mission and find out what is lined up as the “astronomy pic” for tomorrow!

Fantastic Friday Weather

Friday, July 29th, 2005

Expect a partly cloudy sky and comfortable conditions as we wrap up the work week.

The forecast:

On Thursday Nashville’s high temperature was 83 degrees - much nicer than the previous 8 days of 90+ heat. Highs today will hit the middle 80s across the mid-state. A breeze from the north will keep humidity levels comfortable for late July.

The weekend:

Temperatures will warm up a bit each day over the next several days. Dry weather and mostly sunny skies are predicted through the weekend, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees.

The tropics:

Tropical Storm Franklin had 60 mph sustained winds early this morning and was still hanging out east of the U.S. coast. Franklin is not a threat to land and should head northeast over the next few days.

For more information, head to the National Hurricane Center.

Have a good day and a great weekend!

No Complaints About the Clouds and Cooler Wx

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Midday temperatures were in the low 70s in Nashville - after all of the 90 degree weather this feels fantastic! Some sun is peeking through the clouds in Nashville - that will help the numbers rise to the lower 80s this afternoon.

Areas west of I-65 and north of I-40 will see some sunshine and warm up through the afternoon, but areas east of Nashville (especially southeast) will hold onto the clouds through the day.

Here’s a satellite map of the cloud cover across Tennessee.

To check current conditions and temperatures for your part of the mid-state, check out this link. It’s a simple site but we like it so much in the Storm Center that’s it’s our homepage.

Heat & Humidity…Bye Bye!

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

After 8 straight days of 90+ degrees (10 out of last 11) and 14 consecutive days at or above normal…change is upon us! Light northerly winds, mostly cloudy skies and a few rain showers (better chances/more rain south and east of Nashville this afternoon) will cool off all the midstate today. The best part: sunshine returns with the lower humidity for Friday and the weekend! The 7 day forecast is above!

And don’t look now but we are back to almost 4″ of rain below normal for 2005 so far. Won’t take more than a week or two of dry weather to get us right back to where we were six weeks ago!

The National Hurricane Center is thinking Tropical Storm Franklin could briefly become a hurricane before weakening in the north Atlantic over the weekend. There are also two other waves that they think may gradually develop into Harvey and Irene over the next 3-5 days. For more go here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Great learning experience for kids here: with the shuttle orbiting Earth you can find its exact location, mission updates and when you can see it go across the night sky here:

Thank you so much for tomato saving tips…they will be a big help! Need some help again…this time I need you to come up with an official term:

Everyone has heard of the January Thaw, where every January (usually around mid to late month) for some unknown reason the temperatures become uncommonly warm. Well, looking at past years (as I’m known to do occasionally) a found a similar trend. Seems that 6 months from the January Thaw the exact opposite occurs. In mid to late July we see temperatures 5-10 degrees below normal for 5-7 day stretches.

With the cooldown starting today consider the data since 2000:

July 24-28, 2004: Highs in mid 80’s (low of 59 on the 28th)
July 22-31, 2003: Highs 80-83 from July 22-24
July 11-20, 2002: 10 straight days of 80 degree weather
July 12-21, 2001: Another 10 straight of 85-89 highs
July 20-24, 2000: Mid 80’s for highs, mid 60’s for lows

I would like you to help me come up with the term for this, remember it’s called the January Thaw in the winter…post away!

A Break from the 90’s

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Wednesday’s storms knocked down a few trees and produced some hail but the good news is… HEAT RELIEF!
Check out the high temperatures for the next couple of days!heatrelief.jpg

Thursday will be a bit cooler because of lingering clouds and a few showers… it will still be a bit muggy. But Friday, the sun shines and temps are a little warmer but humidity a little lower!

Hey! Remember it is still July… so this is just a short break!!
