A year for the record books:
Who can forget last year’s active hurricane season? Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne: 4 major storms, all impacting Florida within 2 months from mid-August to late September. The Alabama Gulf Coast, long a popular destination for Tennessee vacationers, was also hard hit when Ivan came ashore.

What about this year’s hurricane outlook?
Hurricane season starts today, June 1st, and runs through November 30th. Will it be another above-average season? According to the National Hurricane Center, we’d better batten down the hatches. The NHC is forecasting 12 to 15 tropical storms and 7 to 9 hurricanes this season, with 3 to 5 of the hurricanes being major hurricanes.

While hurricane season starts on June 1st, we’ve got some time before things become active. The graph below shows that historically speaking, the height of hurricane season is September 10th when the ocean water is warmest.
